Choose Your Homestay Wisely
Your productivity hinges on your chosen base. When browsing homestays in areas like Dharamkot, McLeod Ganj, or Bir, prioritise function over just the view. The non-negotiables are reliable Wi-Fi and power backup. Power cuts are a reality in the mountains,
especially during the monsoon season (July-August). Before booking, explicitly ask the host about their power backup solution—is it an inverter or a generator? For internet, don't just take their word for it. Ask for a recent speed test screenshot to verify the connection speed during peak hours. Many homestays and co-living spaces now offer high-speed fibre connections from providers like Jio and Airtel, with speeds that can easily handle video calls and large file transfers.
Pack the Right Tech Essentials
Your laptop is a given, but a successful mountain work-desk needs a few more gadgets. A portable laptop stand and an external keyboard/mouse are crucial for ergonomics, saving you from neck and back pain. Power fluctuations can damage your devices, so a good surge protector is a wise investment. Given the possibility of power cuts, a high-capacity power bank (20,000 mAh or more) is essential for keeping your phone and other small devices charged. To counter unreliable homestay Wi-Fi, carry a portable mobile hotspot device (like a JioFi) and have SIM cards from at least two different providers, such as Jio and Airtel, which offer the best coverage in most parts of Kangra.
Create a Dedicated and Ergonomic Workspace
Even in a cozy homestay room, creating a dedicated workspace is key to signalling to your brain that it's time to work. Avoid working from the bed. If there isn't a proper desk, the dining table can work well. Position your setup near a window for natural light, which reduces eye strain and improves mood, but avoid having the window directly behind you to prevent backlighting issues on video calls. To raise your laptop to eye level, a stack of books can substitute for a proper stand. Noise-cancelling headphones are invaluable for blocking out ambient noise and focusing during important meetings or deep work sessions.
Master Your Connectivity Strategy
In the Himalayas, internet can be unpredictable. While many towns like Dharamshala and Bir now have reliable fibre broadband, you must have a backup plan. Relying solely on your homestay's Wi-Fi is a risk. Activate a mobile hotspot plan on your phone or use a dedicated portable hotspot device. Airtel has expanded its 5G network in Himachal, and Jio also offers strong 5G and fiber services in key areas. This dual-connectivity approach ensures that if one network fails, you can seamlessly switch to the other. For truly remote areas within Kangra, sometimes BSNL offers the most reliable, albeit slower, connection.
Structure Your Day for Work and Play
The allure of the mountains can be a major distraction. The key to balancing work and leisure is a structured routine. Consider adopting a schedule that complements the mountain lifestyle. For instance, start your workday early and finish by mid-afternoon. This frees up your late afternoons for a hike, a visit to a local monastery, or simply enjoying the sunset over the Dhauladhar range. Time-blocking can be an effective technique: allocate specific, uninterrupted hours for deep work and other blocks for meetings, emails, and exploration. This discipline ensures you meet your professional commitments while still having ample time to recharge in nature.
