IT providers are reporting that clients expect the same work for 25% to 30% less, forcing a shift towards outcome-based pricing. This means fees are increasingly tied to performance and results, not the number of hours developers work. This shift, coupled with AI-related uncertainty, is also leading to shorter contract durations. For professionals, this translates to a more precarious environment where value must be demonstrated constantly. It also signals a move towards flexible staffing, with companies like TeamLease advising clients to keep 20-30% of their workforce on outsourced or variable models.
The Rise of the Specialist
While overall IT hiring has slowed, recruitment for specialized AI roles is booming. A recent report highlighted a 16% year-on-year increase in AI-related hiring in the IT sector, even as overall IT job listings declined. Companies are competing for a small pool of senior, specialized talent. There is intense demand for professionals with skills in machine learning, data analysis, AI model integration, MLOps, and cybersecurity with an AI focus. Companies are willing to pay salary premiums of 30-40% for top talent in these niche areas. The generalist coder is making way for the AI specialist, who can design, build, and manage intelligent systems. The message is clear: the path to career growth is no longer about frequent job switches but about gaining deep expertise in high-demand technologies.
