Why Delays Became the New Normal
For years, travellers booked flights with the reasonable expectation that they would depart and arrive roughly on schedule. Today, that assumption is being tested. A combination of factors has created a perfect storm for disruptions. Indian aviation is navigating
unprecedented growth, but this has led to significant air traffic congestion at major metro airports. Airlines are also dealing with operational pressures, including staff shortages, maintenance issues, and complex logistical challenges. Furthermore, external shocks like volatile fuel prices and geopolitical tensions requiring longer flight routes add another layer of unpredictdictability, making on-time performance (OTP) harder to maintain. This challenging environment means delays can easily cascade through an airline's network, turning a single late departure into a day of chaos for thousands of passengers.
From Expectation to Advantage
In an environment where delays are common, an airline's ability to be consistently punctual is no longer just good service—it's a powerful marketing tool. Airlines with strong OTP records are beginning to leverage this in their branding, knowing that reliability is a key concern for both business and leisure travellers. Frequent delays and cancellations come with significant costs, including expenses for passenger compensation, crew overtime, and extra fuel burn. More importantly, they cause severe reputational damage. As a result, airlines that invest in operational resilience—through efficient ground handling, smart scheduling, and modern fleets—can create a clear distinction from their rivals. Punctuality has shifted from being a basic expectation to a premium feature that travellers are increasingly willing to choose and trust.
The Indian Punctuality Scorecard
In India, the difference in on-time performance among carriers is stark and officially tracked. According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), there are clear leaders and laggards. For much of 2025 and 2026, IndiGo has consistently led the pack with an OTP typically between 80-85%. Newcomer Akasa Air has also established itself as a reliable operator, with its punctuality often in the 78-82% range. The Tata-owned Air India group, undergoing a massive transformation, has shown significant improvement, with recent data from analytics firm Cirium placing it fourth globally for June 2026 with an OTP of nearly 87%. This marks a major improvement from its DGCA-reported domestic performance in May, which stood at 74.5%. At the other end of the scale, some carriers have struggled significantly with punctuality, highlighting the performance gap.
What Drives On-Time Performance?
Achieving a high OTP is a complex operational ballet. For an airline like IndiGo, success is built on a strategy of using a single aircraft type (the Airbus A320 family) to simplify maintenance and turnarounds. Akasa Air benefits from operating one of the newest fleets in the country, which reduces technical snags. On the other hand, airlines with older planes, more complex networks (like hub-and-spoke models), or those facing financial headwinds often struggle to keep their schedules tight. Even external factors like monsoon season or winter fog in North India can reduce an airline's OTP by 5-12 percentage points, making operational discipline even more critical. Investments in technology, real-time flight monitoring, and efficient crew management are all crucial components that separate the punctual from the tardy.
How Travellers Can Use This Data
For passengers, this new focus on punctuality provides an opportunity to make more informed choices. Before booking a flight, especially for a time-sensitive journey, it is now easier than ever to become your own travel analyst. The DGCA publishes monthly reports on airline OTP, making the data publicly accessible. Checking these figures can provide a clear picture of which airlines are most likely to get you to your destination on time. While price will always be a major factor, travellers are increasingly considering an airline's reliability. Some booking platforms have even noted that business travellers often filter searches to show only airlines with a proven track record of punctuality. In an era of frequent disruptions, choosing an airline based on its on-time performance is one of the best ways to minimise travel stress.
