A Silent Crisis Unfolding
Across the nation, a silent crisis is compromising our agricultural future. It is estimated that nearly one-third of India's total land area is suffering from some form of degradation. This isn't just a marginal issue; it affects the very heartlands of our food
production. States like Punjab and Haryana, the cradles of the Green Revolution, are now facing severe declines in soil organic carbon, a key indicator of fertility. Over the years, intensive farming, an over-reliance on chemical fertilisers, and unsustainable water management have stripped the soil of its vitality. India loses an estimated 5.3 billion tonnes of topsoil to erosion every year, carrying away essential nutrients and undermining the land's ability to produce food.
The High Cost of Unhealthy Soil
The consequences of soil degradation are not abstract; they are felt in farming communities and on dinner plates nationwide. As soil loses its natural fertility, farmers are forced to use more chemical fertilisers to maintain yields, leading to a vicious cycle of increasing costs and diminishing returns. This imbalanced use of fertilisers, particularly nitrogen, has created widespread deficiencies in essential micronutrients like zinc and iron in our soils, which in turn leads to less nutritious food. This directly impacts public health, contributing to nutritional deficiencies in the population. For millions of farmers, degraded soil means lower productivity and greater vulnerability to climate shocks like droughts and floods, pushing them further into economic distress.
What Soil Recovery Looks Like
Turning this tide requires a fundamental shift in how we view soil: not as an inert medium, but as a living ecosystem. Soil recovery, or regenerative agriculture, involves practices that rebuild soil health and restore its natural functions. Methods like crop rotation, using cover crops, and integrating organic matter like compost can dramatically improve soil structure and fertility. These practices help increase the soil's capacity to hold water, making farms more resilient to drought, and enhance the population of beneficial microbes that are essential for nutrient cycling. The Government of India has already initiated schemes like the Soil Health Card, which provides farmers with nutrient status reports for their land, and Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) to promote organic farming. These are crucial first steps, but they need to be scaled up and integrated into a broader national strategy.
A Long-Term Investment in Our Future
For too long, food system planning has prioritised short-term yield increases over long-term sustainability. The Green Revolution was a necessary response to food scarcity, but its methods have now come at a significant ecological cost. To ensure food security for a population of over 1.4 billion people, India must make soil health a central pillar of its long-term planning. This means creating policies that incentivise farmers to adopt regenerative practices, moving beyond just providing fertilisers to actively helping them rebuild their soil's natural fertility. It involves strengthening research and extension services to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools they need. Investing in soil recovery is not an expense but an essential investment in national resilience, public health, and the economic well-being of the agricultural sector that supports over half our population.
