A New Guardian in a Unique Orbit
EOS-05 is not just another satellite; it represents a strategic leap in India's remote sensing capabilities. Unlike most Earth observation satellites, which circle the planet in low-polar orbits a few hundred kilometres up, EOS-05 is designed for a geosynchronous
orbit. This means it will be positioned at an altitude of roughly 36,000 kilometres, matching the Earth's rotation. From this high perch, it can continuously watch over the Indian subcontinent, providing a constant stream of data. While lower-orbit satellites provide finer detail, they can only revisit a specific location every few days. EOS-05 trades some of that high resolution for persistence, offering the ability to monitor rapidly unfolding events in near real-time.
The Final Push into Position
Reaching this final orbit is a delicate and crucial process. After being launched by the powerful GSLV rocket into an initial 'transfer orbit', the satellite must perform a series of complex manoeuvres on its own. This 'orbit-raising' phase involves firing its onboard liquid apogee motor at precise moments to progressively push its orbit higher and circularize it. Think of it as a multi-stage journey, with each engine burn acting as a step up a massive orbital ladder. The successful completion of this phase means the satellite has reached its designated spot, where it can remain fixed over a specific longitude, ready to begin its vital work of observing India and its neighbouring regions.
An All-Weather, Day-and-Night Watch
One of the key strengths of India’s Earth observation programme is the use of varied sensors, and a satellite like EOS-05 would build on this legacy. Many of ISRO's observation satellites, like those in the RISAT series, are equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. Unlike optical cameras that need clear skies and daylight, SAR can see through clouds, haze, and darkness. This all-weather, day-and-night capability is indispensable for a country like India, which experiences heavy cloud cover during the monsoon season. It ensures that critical monitoring for floods, cyclones, or security threats is never interrupted by bad weather or the time of day, providing an unwavering eye in the sky.
Transforming Disaster Management
The most immediate and life-saving application of a satellite like EOS-05 is in disaster management. India is prone to a wide range of natural calamities, from cyclones and floods to forest fires and landslides. A geostationary satellite that can provide continuous monitoring of a developing weather system, like a cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal, is invaluable. It allows authorities to track the storm's intensity and path in near real-time, issue more accurate warnings, and plan for evacuations. For floods, it can map the extent of inundation as it happens, helping direct rescue and relief efforts to the worst-affected areas. This capability moves disaster management from a reactive to a proactive approach, saving lives and property.
A Major Boost for Agriculture
Beyond emergencies, advanced Earth observation has a profound impact on India's agricultural backbone. Satellite data is already revolutionizing farming by providing insights into crop health, soil moisture levels, and pest infestations. With more frequent imagery, farmers can receive timely advice on when to irrigate, where to apply fertilisers, and how to manage crop stress, a practice known as precision agriculture. National programmes use this data to forecast crop yields, which helps in making crucial policy decisions about food stocks and pricing. By providing a macro-level view of agricultural trends and a micro-level guide for individual farmers, these satellites directly contribute to enhancing food security and farmer incomes.
