Stretching along India's western coast, the Western Ghats are a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and some of the country's most spectacular trekking routes. Their popularity, amplified by social media, has surged
in recent years. However, this boom has also highlighted the inherent dangers. Trekkers face a formidable set of challenges, especially during the monsoon season. Trails can become treacherous, with slippery lateritic rock creating hazardous conditions on steep sections. Sudden, dense mist can cause disorientation, leading hikers off marked paths. Swollen streams and the risk of flash floods in narrow gullies present life-threatening obstacles, often with little warning. These environmental risks, combined with the sheer remoteness of many trails, have prompted authorities and operators to seek better safety solutions.
Introducing the Digital Lifeline
The solution emerging is a piece of technology known as a real-time beacon, often in the form of a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or a more advanced satellite messenger. Unlike a mobile phone, which is useless without a cellular signal, these devices connect to global satellite networks. When a hiker carries one, it transmits their precise GPS coordinates at regular intervals, allowing their location to be tracked from anywhere. While basic PLBs are designed to send a one-way SOS signal in a dire emergency, many modern devices used by trekking companies allow for two-way communication. This means a guide can send and receive text messages, provide updates, or call for help even from a remote valley with zero network coverage.
From Reactive Rescue to Proactive Safety
This technology marks a fundamental shift from reactive rescue to proactive safety management. Instead of only being able to respond after an accident has been reported, operators can now monitor their groups live on a digital dashboard. If a group deviates from the planned route, remains stationary for an unusually long time, or approaches a known hazard, the operator can intervene. They can message the guide to check in, provide instructions to turn back, or reroute them away from danger, such as an area where heavy rains have caused a stream to swell. This preventative capability is a game-changer. It’s no longer just about finding lost hikers; it's about preventing them from getting lost or into trouble in the first place.
A New Regulatory and Safety Landscape
The adoption of this technology coincides with increased government regulation aimed at curbing accidents. States like Karnataka, for instance, have introduced strict new rules for 2026, including mandatory online permits, daily limits on the number of trekkers per trail, and compulsory certified guides. Some regulations now even mandate a GPS check-in and check-out for certain routes, where failing to check out automatically triggers a search protocol. Within this stricter framework, responsible trekking operators are using beacon technology as a key part of their safety protocol. It not only helps them comply with regulations but also offers a higher standard of care that appeals to safety-conscious clients, providing peace of mind for both the trekkers and their families.
India's Broader Push for Tech-Enabled Safety
The use of tracking technology for safety in the Ghats is part of a larger national trend. In various contexts across India, authorities are leveraging similar systems to protect people in challenging environments. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), for example, recently deployed a data-driven security model using advanced tracking to mitigate wildlife encounters on its popular pilgrimage footpaths. Similarly, the Haj Committee of India has made GPS-enabled smart wristbands mandatory for pilgrims to monitor their location and health. These initiatives show a growing recognition that modern technology, when applied thoughtfully, can provide a powerful layer of security for large-scale public movements and outdoor activities.
