Go Beyond the Main Protein Number
The first number everyone sees is the grams of protein per serving, but this figure alone doesn't tell the whole story. A more telling metric is protein efficiency. You can calculate this by dividing the grams of protein by the serving size in grams.
For example, if a 30-gram scoop provides 25 grams of protein, the powder is about 83% protein by weight, which signals a high-quality product with minimal fillers. Anything below 70% suggests the product may contain a significant amount of other, less desirable ingredients. Experts recommend looking for a powder that delivers 20-25 grams of protein per serving to effectively support muscle growth and repair.
Identify the Protein Source
The ingredient list, which is organized by weight, is your best friend. The first few ingredients should be the protein sources themselves. Common animal-based proteins like whey and casein are considered complete proteins, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids your body needs. Plant-based powders, such as those from peas, rice, or hemp, are also excellent options, though some are incomplete on their own. If you choose a plant-based powder, look for a blend of different sources to ensure you're getting a complete amino acid profile. Avoid vague terms like “proprietary protein blend,” as this can be a way for manufacturers to hide the use of cheaper, lower-quality proteins.
Watch for 'Protein Spiking'
One of the most deceptive practices in the supplement industry is known as “protein spiking” or “amino spiking.” This occurs when manufacturers add cheap, individual amino acids like glycine or taurine to a powder. Standard lab tests measure protein content by calculating total nitrogen, and these added compounds are rich in nitrogen. This allows companies to artificially inflate the protein grams listed on the label without providing the complete protein you're paying for, ultimately cheating the consumer. If you see individual amino acids listed high on the ingredient list, it can be a major red flag.
Scan for Unwanted Fillers and Sweeteners
To improve texture and cut costs, some powders contain fillers like gums (xanthan, guar), lecithin, or inulin. While not always harmful, these ingredients provide no protein value and can cause digestive issues like bloating and gas in some people. Similarly, check the sweetener source. Many powders use artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame to keep calories low. However, some research suggests these sweeteners may negatively affect gut bacteria and could be linked to other long-term health concerns. A short, recognizable ingredient list is generally a good sign.
Look for Third-Party Testing Seals
The supplement industry is not as tightly regulated as many believe, which makes independent verification crucial. Contaminants like heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium) can sometimes be found in protein powders, particularly plant-based ones, depending on where ingredients are sourced. To ensure safety and quality, look for certifications from third-party organizations on the label. Seals from NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or USP indicate that the product has been independently tested for banned substances, contaminants, and label accuracy. These certifications provide peace of mind that what's inside the tub matches what's on the label.
