Why the Major Disruption?
Indian Railways' Ambala Division is undertaking a significant upgrade of the Chandigarh railway station. This 36-day power and traffic block is necessary for the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) to erect a new through-roof structure and dismantle
the old foot-overbridge girders. This essential work is part of a larger redevelopment project aimed at modernizing the station and improving passenger facilities for the long term. The work is scheduled in three phases to minimize the impact, affecting different sets of railway lines and platforms sequentially until October 15.
The Headline Figure: 54 Train Trips Affected
The headline number refers to the 54 train trips that will be 'short-terminated' or 'short-originated'. This means that instead of running their full route to or from Chandigarh, these services will start or end their journeys at Ambala Cantonment station on specified dates. Passengers holding tickets for these trains will need to arrange for their own transport between Chandigarh and Ambala to complete their journey. Key services affected under this category include the Ramnagar-Chandigarh Express, the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath, and the Udaipur-Chandigarh Express on specific dates through mid-October.
Complete Cancellations: 12 Services Halted
Beyond the short-terminations, a dozen train services have been completely cancelled for the duration of the block, impacting a total of 442 individual trips between September 9 and October 16. This represents the most severe level of disruption. Major services that will not run during this period include the Amritsar-Chandigarh-Amritsar Express (14541/14542) and the Chandigarh-Ferozepur-Chandigarh service (14629/14630). Several other services connecting Kalka, Ambala, and Delhi are also among those cancelled, affecting daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
Diversions and Partial Adjustments
A smaller number of trains will be diverted to bypass Chandigarh altogether. For instance, two trains on the Ludhiana-Amritsar route will be rerouted via Sirhind on certain dates in October, skipping both Chandigarh and Mohali stations. To ease the inconvenience for passengers, the railway authorities have also arranged for temporary halts at SAS Nagar (Mohali) for eight long-distance trains. This includes services like the Sambalpur-Jammu Tawi Express and the Dehradun-Amritsar Express, providing a nearby alternative for those travelling to the region. Furthermore, dozens of other popular trains, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat services, will experience platform changes at various stages of the block, making it crucial to check platform numbers upon arrival at the station.

With schedules subject to change throughout this 36-day period, passengers are strongly advised not to assume their train will run as originally scheduled. Before leaving for the station, travellers should verify the latest status of their train. The most reliable sources for up-to-date information are the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app and the Rail Madad helpline at number 139. Station enquiry counters and official announcements at the station will also provide the latest details on cancellations, diversions, and platform changes. Planning ahead and allowing for extra travel time, especially if you need to commute between Chandigarh and Ambala, is highly recommended.
