From Government-Led to a Private Rush
For decades, a career in India’s space sector meant one thing: securing a coveted position at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Today, the landscape is virtually unrecognisable. The Indian Space Policy of 2023 was a game-changer, formally
opening the doors for private companies to participate in every aspect of the space economy—from building rockets and satellites to launching them and analysing the data they collect. This policy shift, coupled with the establishment of IN-SPACe as an independent regulator, has triggered an entrepreneurial gold rush. As a result, India's space economy, valued at around $8.4 billion in 2023, is projected to surge to $44 billion by 2033.
A New Constellation of Startups
The real engine of this job boom is the hundreds of new space-tech startups. As of mid-2026, India is home to over 400 such companies, which are attracting significant venture capital and hiring aggressively. Firms like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are developing their own launch vehicles, while companies such as Pixxel are building constellations of Earth-observation satellites. Others, like Dhruva Space, focus on satellite manufacturing, and Digantara is pioneering space surveillance. These startups offer a fast-paced environment where engineers can get hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, often with competitive salaries and the lure of stock options.
The Skills in High Demand
This expanding ecosystem requires a wide array of specialised skills. While aerospace and astronautical engineers remain central, the demand now extends far beyond traditional roles. There is a significant need for professionals with expertise in propulsion systems, avionics, guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) systems. However, the talent search has broadened to include software developers, embedded systems engineers, and data scientists. Skills in AI and machine learning are increasingly crucial for analysing the vast amounts of data sent back from satellites, with applications in everything from agriculture to disaster management. The demand is so high that some startups are recruiting from adjacent industries like automotive, telecom, and defence electronics and reskilling them for the space sector.
Beyond the Rocket Scientists
The talent market isn't just limited to hardcore engineering roles. As the industry matures, it is creating opportunities for a diverse range of professionals. The need for project managers, supply chain experts, and quality control specialists is growing rapidly to oversee complex manufacturing and launch schedules. Furthermore, these startups are businesses that need financial analysts, marketing professionals, legal experts specialising in space law, and business development managers to secure domestic and international clients. Even roles like video editors and accountants are appearing on the careers pages of space-tech firms, showing the depth of the ecosystem being built. This signals a crucial shift: the space sector is becoming a complete industry, not just a research-focused endeavour.
The Path Forward
This rapid growth is not without challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is finding talent with practical, hands-on experience in building and testing complex aerospace systems. While India has a large pool of engineers, the specific combination of deep technical knowledge and product development maturity remains relatively scarce, leading to a war for experienced talent. Some reports even indicate that ISRO is facing attrition as experienced scientists move to the private sector for more lucrative opportunities. To address this, companies and academic institutions are working to build a more robust talent pipeline through specialised university partnerships, internships, and reskilling programs. The industry's expansion is projected to create tens of thousands of new jobs in the coming years, solidifying its place as a key engine of India's high-tech economy.
