Why the Rules Are Changing
For years, banks used free lounge access as a powerful tool to attract new customers, offering it on even entry-level cards. This strategy was incredibly successful, leading to a surge in lounge usage across India. However, this popularity created a new problem:
overcrowding and soaring costs for banks, who pay lounge operators for every visit, a fee that can range from a few hundred to over a thousand rupees. As passenger numbers boomed post-pandemic, the expense became unsustainable. In response, major banks like HDFC, ICICI, Axis, and SBI Card have shifted their strategy. They are now moving lounge access from a mass-market freebie to a premium benefit reserved for customers who actively use their cards and spend more.
The New Rules of the Game
The most significant change is the introduction of minimum spending requirements. Simply holding a card is no longer enough. To unlock complimentary lounge visits, many cardholders must now spend a certain amount in the previous calendar quarter. These spending thresholds vary significantly by card, from as low as ₹5,000 for some to ₹75,000 or more for others. For instance, some HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank cards now require spends of around ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 in a quarter to qualify for lounge access in the next one. Some banks have also completely removed the benefit from certain card types, like the RuPay Platinum debit card, which lost its complimentary access from April 2026. These changes mean that access is no longer guaranteed; it has become a conditional privilege based on your spending habits.
What This Means for Young Professionals
These new rules disproportionately affect young workers who are often at the beginning of their careers. Meeting a quarterly spending target of ₹50,000 or more can be challenging on an entry-level salary. What was once an accessible status symbol is now tied directly to significant expenditure, potentially putting it out of reach for many who enjoyed it before. This shift forces a re-evaluation of which credit cards offer genuine value. A card that was chosen specifically for its lounge benefits may no longer be the right fit if the spending conditions are too high to meet comfortably without making unnecessary purchases. The focus has moved from acquiring a card with perks to actively managing spending to earn those perks.
Strategies to Keep Your Lounge Access
All is not lost, but it does require a more strategic approach. First, review your current credit and debit cards. Check the bank’s official website or recent communications for the updated lounge access policy, as rules can continue to evolve. Understand the exact spending threshold and the qualification period. If your current card's requirements are too steep, consider a different one. Some cards may still offer access with lower spending targets. The key is to find a card that aligns with your natural spending habits rather than forcing extra expenses. Another strategy is to consolidate your spending onto one primary card to ensure you meet its quarterly target. Finally, always monitor your spending throughout the quarter to track your progress toward unlocking the benefit for your next trip.
