He was the jewel of the Premier League, a wizard with the ball at his feet who inspired Chelsea to glory. So when Eden Hazard made his dream move to Real Madrid in 2019, it felt like the final step. But what followed was a nightmare.
The King of Stamford Bridge
For seven years, Eden
Hazard was pure magic in a blue shirt. From 2012 to 2019, he was the undisputed star of Chelsea and often the best player in England. With a low centre of gravity, mesmerising dribbling, and an explosive burst of pace, he was virtually unplayable on his day. He scored 110 goals in 352 appearances for the club, but his influence went far beyond statistics. He was the man for the big moments, the creative force who led Chelsea to two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, an FA Cup, and a League Cup. Crowds would gasp in anticipation whenever he received the ball, knowing he could single-handedly change a game. He was not just a player; he was an icon, a hero who departed for his next chapter after a match-winning two-goal performance in a European final.
A Dream Move Turns to Dust
In the summer of 2019, Real Madrid paid a fee reported to be €100 million, potentially rising with add-ons, to bring Hazard to the Santiago Bernabéu. It was the realisation of a long-held dream for the Belgian, and for Madrid, it was the blockbuster 'Galáctico' signing intended to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo. The expectation was immense. Hazard was 28, in the prime of his career, and coming off one of his best-ever seasons. He was handed the legendary number 7 shirt and unveiled to a packed stadium. But the dream quickly soured. He arrived for his first pre-season reportedly overweight, a sign of the struggles to come. The pressure cooker environment of Madrid is unlike any other, and the player who had seemed so carefree and joyful in London suddenly looked burdened.
The Injury Nightmare
The single biggest reason for Hazard's failure in Spain can be summed up in one word: injuries. His time at Madrid was a relentless cycle of physical setbacks. A crucial moment came in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain in November 2019, when a tackle from his international teammate Thomas Meunier caused a microfracture in an ankle he had previously injured. That incident seemed to trigger a domino effect. Over his four seasons in Madrid, he suffered around 18 separate injuries, missing a staggering number of games. Muscle strains, hamstring problems, and repeated ankle issues meant he was never able to build momentum or find the consistent rhythm that had made him so devastating at Chelsea. The most fouled player in the Premier League for many years, the cumulative damage appeared to have finally caught up with him.
A Ghost of His Former Self
The physical toll led to a complete erosion of his form and confidence. The explosive acceleration that allowed him to glide past defenders was gone. His dribbling, once his greatest weapon, became less frequent and far less effective. In 76 appearances over four years, he scored just seven goals. To put that in perspective, he scored 21 in his final season for Chelsea alone. He became a peripheral figure, often an unused substitute. Managers Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti publicly maintained their respect for him but couldn't justify picking him, especially with the electrifying rise of Vinícius Júnior on the left wing. Even Hazard himself admitted his first year was the 'worst season of my career'.
An Unceremonious End
By the end, his presence at the club was almost an afterthought. He won a La Liga title and a Champions League medal with Madrid, but his contribution to those triumphs was minimal. The club and player mutually agreed to terminate his contract a year early in the summer of 2023. After rejecting offers from other leagues, Hazard announced his retirement from football at the age of 32. In his own words, the decision was simple because he no longer had fun on the pitch or in training. It was a sad and anticlimactic end for a player who had once brought so much joy to millions.
