An unopened product can last for about three years, but once opened, the clock starts ticking faster. This is indicated by the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol—an open jar with a number like "12M" for 12 months. Using expired products isn't just ineffective; it can be harmful, leading to skin irritation, breakouts, infections, and allergic reactions as preservatives break down and bacteria grow. Stockpiling more than you can realistically use within this period is a waste of money and a potential health risk.
Verify Before You Buy: Authenticity and Expiry
The festive rush is prime time for counterfeit products to enter the market, often at prices that seem too good to be true. To protect yourself, always buy from authorised dealers, the brand’s official website, or reputable multi-brand retailers. Under Indian law, all cosmetics must display crucial information on their labels, including the manufacturer's name and address, manufacturing and expiry dates, the full ingredient list, and the MRP. Be wary of packaging with misspelled words, blurry logos, or flimsy materials. Many brands now include batch codes or QR codes that you can use to verify authenticity on their website. If a deal feels suspiciously cheap, it’s a major red flag.
Smart Shopping Strategies for the Season
You can still enjoy festive sales without the buyer's remorse. First, make a list. Know what you actually need versus what the dazzling promotions want you to buy. If you're trying a new product, always buy the smallest size available first, even if the larger size is on sale. For products you already know and love, check the expiry date on the packaging before buying in multiples. Ensure you can finish them before they go bad. It's also wise to check your existing collection before you shop. You might already have a similar eyeshadow palette or lipstick shade hiding in a drawer. This mindful approach helps you take advantage of genuine savings without accumulating products that will expire or go unused.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Even with careful shopping, you might receive a product that's expired, damaged, or clearly fake. Familiarise yourself with your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which protects you from unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements. The Act mandates that sellers cannot deliberately conceal important information or make unsubstantiated claims about a product's quality or performance. While getting a refund for an opened cosmetic might be difficult, you have clear rights when a product is not what was promised or is delivered in a compromised state.
