The New Game-Changer: Direct to Daman
A new direct flight operated by Alliance Air now connects Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) with Daman's NAMO Airport. This service, part of the government's regional connectivity scheme, fundamentally changes the travel equation for both
leisure and business travellers. The flight itself is approximately two hours and fifty minutes long. Previously, Daman was notoriously difficult to reach from the capital, involving either a very long train journey or a multi-leg trip involving a flight and a lengthy road transfer. This new route eliminates the most time-consuming and exhausting part of the journey: the transfer from a distant airport. It lands you directly in the Union Territory, a short distance from the main town, beaches, and the nearby industrial hub of Vapi.
The Old Way: The Mumbai Detour
For years, the most common route for Delhiites was to catch a flight to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and then travel by road to Daman. While flights to Mumbai are frequent, this is where the journey really begins. The road trip from Mumbai airport to Daman covers a distance of around 170-180 kilometres. Under ideal conditions, this drive takes about three and a half to four hours, but Mumbai's unpredictable traffic can easily extend that. Add to that the time spent deplaning, collecting baggage, and hiring a cab, and your total transfer time could easily surpass five hours. A one-way taxi can cost anywhere from ₹2,900 to over ₹4,000, adding a significant expense on top of your airfare. In total, a 'quick' flight to Mumbai could result in a full-day affair to reach Daman.
The Surat Alternative
A slightly better alternative was flying from Delhi to Surat Airport (STV). Surat is geographically closer to Daman, which shortens the subsequent road journey considerably. The distance from Surat airport to Daman is about 120-130 kilometres. The drive typically takes between two to three hours, saving you a valuable hour or two compared to the Mumbai route. However, this option came with its own trade-offs. Flight connectivity between Delhi and Surat, while available, is often less frequent and potentially more expensive than the hyper-competitive Delhi-Mumbai route. The cost of a cab from Surat to Daman is also a factor, with fares starting from around ₹2,300. While better than the Mumbai option, it still involved a significant amount of ground travel after the flight.
A Head-to-Head Journey Comparison
Let's break down the total estimated travel time, door to door. Flying via Mumbai could easily take 8-9 hours: one hour for airport check-in at Delhi, a two-hour flight, one hour to deplane and find a cab in Mumbai, and a four-to-five-hour drive to Daman. The Surat route might cut this down to 7-8 hours, factoring in similar airport time, the flight, and the shorter two-to-three-hour drive. The new direct flight changes everything. With a flight time of just under three hours, even after accounting for check-in and local transit from Daman airport to your hotel, the total journey time is slashed to around 4-5 hours. This saves a minimum of three to four hours compared to the next best alternative. It transforms Daman from an overnight travel commitment into a feasible weekend trip.
Who Benefits Most?
The new direct flight is a clear winner for several types of travellers. For tourists and weekend explorers from the Delhi-NCR region, it makes Daman's beaches, Portuguese forts, and relaxed atmosphere genuinely accessible for a short getaway. Previously, the long travel time made it an impractical choice for a two-day trip. Business travellers heading to the industrial zones of Daman and nearby Vapi are also major beneficiaries. The ability to fly in directly saves immense time and reduces travel fatigue, allowing for more productive trips. While the direct flight fare, at around ₹6,500-₹7,000, might seem higher than a discounted ticket to Mumbai, the savings on an expensive multi-hour taxi ride and, more importantly, your time, makes it a compelling value proposition.
