The New Travel Calculus
For decades, a European or American vacation was the ultimate travel goal for many Indian families. But a combination of rising costs, complex visa procedures, and geopolitical uncertainty is causing a major rethink. Today’s Indian traveller is more strategic,
prioritising value, convenience, and safety. The question is no longer just 'where to go?' but 'where can I go easily and affordably?'. This shift in mindset is leading to a significant pivot towards short-haul international destinations, particularly across Southeast Asia. Travel industry reports show that while outbound travel from India is booming, it is countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam that are seeing a dramatic surge in interest.
The Game-Changing Power of 'Visa-Free'
One of the single biggest drivers of this eastward shift is the introduction of simplified visa policies. For many Indian passport holders, the hassle of lengthy visa applications, which often require extensive paperwork and uncertain outcomes, has been a major deterrent. In response, several Southeast Asian nations have rolled out the welcome mat. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka have recently offered visa-free entry for Indian tourists, removing a significant barrier to travel. Thailand now allows a 60-day visa-free stay, while Malaysia offers 30 days. Vietnam has streamlined its process with a quick and affordable e-visa. This ease of access makes spontaneous trips and long-weekend getaways a realistic and attractive option.
Where Your Rupee Goes Further
Beyond easy access, the cost is a massive factor. A trip to Southeast Asia is significantly more affordable than a comparable holiday in the West. In some cases, a flight from Delhi to Kochi can be more expensive than a flight to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. The affordability extends across the board: accommodation, food, and local transport are all considerably cheaper. For example, a mid-range hotel in Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City can cost less than half the price of a similar hotel in a major European city. For budget-conscious travellers, especially large families and younger groups like Gen Z, this region offers the chance to have a rich international experience without breaking the bank.
A Buffet of Experiences
The appeal of the East isn't just about cost; it's about the sheer diversity of experiences on offer. The region caters to every type of traveller, from thrill-seekers to culture vultures. Recent data shows a trend towards experience-led travel, with theme parks like Universal Studios Singapore and VinWonders in Vietnam being major draws for Indian families. Beyond theme parks, tourists are flocking to island tours in places like Pattaya, exploring the cultural heritage of cities like Hanoi and George Town, and enjoying the world-renowned street food scenes. The rise of pop culture, including K-dramas and anime, has also fuelled interest in East Asia, making destinations in Japan and South Korea increasingly popular among younger Indians.
The New Hotspots on the Map
While Thailand remains a perennial favourite, other countries are quickly gaining ground. Vietnam has emerged as a rising star, praised for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and incredible value for money. Cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offer a vibrant mix of history and modernity, while natural wonders like Ha Long Bay captivate visitors. Malaysia attracts travellers with its cultural melting pot, exemplified by cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and its beautiful islands like Langkawi. Indonesia, particularly Bali, continues to be a top choice for its unique blend of spirituality, surf culture, and natural beauty. Even the Philippines, with its world-class beaches, is gaining traction as a visa-free option for many Indian travellers.
