Your Body's Sleep Switch
To understand why humid nights are so disruptive, we first need to look at how our bodies get ready for sleep. It’s all about temperature. Your body has an internal clock, or circadian rhythm, that manages your sleep-wake cycle. A few hours before bedtime,
this clock signals your body to start cooling down. Your core temperature needs to drop by about one to two degrees for you to fall asleep and stay asleep. This temperature drop is a critical signal to the brain that it's time to rest. Your body achieves this by increasing blood flow to your skin, hands, and feet, releasing heat into the environment.
How Humidity Hijacks Your Sleep
This is where humidity comes in and ruins the plan. The body's primary way of cooling itself is by sweating. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it takes heat with it. But when the air is already full of moisture—as it is on a humid monsoon night—your sweat can't evaporate effectively. The air is too saturated to absorb the moisture from your skin. As a result, that sticky, clammy feeling you get is your body's cooling system failing. Your core temperature struggles to drop, preventing you from falling into a deep, restful sleep and causing you to wake up more frequently.
It's Deeper Than Discomfort
Waking up in a pool of sweat is annoying, but the impact of high humidity goes much deeper. Quality sleep isn't just about being unconscious; it's about cycling through different sleep stages. High humidity has been shown to reduce the amount of time we spend in the most restorative phases: deep sleep (NREM) and REM sleep. Deep sleep is crucial for physical recovery, tissue repair, and immune system function, while REM sleep is vital for memory and emotional regulation. When humidity interrupts these stages, you can wake up feeling groggy and unrested, even if you don't remember waking up multiple times.
The Monsoon's Double-Edged Sword
During the Indian monsoon, even if the ambient temperature drops, the relative humidity can skyrocket to well over 70 or 80 percent. Experts agree that the ideal humidity for sleeping is between 40% and 60%. Anything above 60% starts to significantly interfere with sleep and can also promote the growth of allergens like mould and dust mites in your home, which can further disrupt sleep by triggering allergies or respiratory issues.
How to Reclaim Your Sleep
While you can't control the weather, you can control your bedroom environment. Using an air conditioner on its 'dry' or 'dehumidify' mode is very effective. If you don't have an AC, a standalone dehumidifier is an excellent investment to pull excess moisture from the air. Increasing air circulation with a fan can also help sweat evaporate. Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from natural fibres like cotton or bamboo, which wick moisture away from the body, unlike synthetic fabrics that trap heat. Finally, taking a lukewarm shower before bed can help kickstart the body's cooling process, as the rapid evaporation of water from your skin after you get out helps lower your body temperature.
