The Fundamental Difference: Secured vs. Unsecured
The primary distinction lies in what you offer the lender as security. A gold loan is a 'secured' loan, meaning you pledge your gold ornaments as collateral. This physical guarantee reduces the lender's risk. In contrast, a personal loan is 'unsecured'.
Lenders grant it based on your creditworthiness—your income, employment stability, and past repayment behaviour—without requiring any asset as collateral. This fundamental difference influences everything from interest rates to the approval process.
Interest Rates and Overall Cost
Because the lender's risk is lower with a pledged asset, gold loans almost always come with lower interest rates. Interest rates for gold loans can start from as low as 7.7% per annum, whereas personal loan rates typically begin higher, often around 10.5% or more, and can climb significantly depending on your credit profile. Beyond the interest rate, processing fees for gold loans are also generally lower, often around 1% of the loan amount, compared to personal loans which can charge up to 4% or more. These cost differences can add up to significant savings over the life of the loan.
Eligibility and the Role of Your Credit Score
This is a major deciding factor for many borrowers. For a personal loan, your CIBIL or credit score is paramount. Lenders see it as the primary indicator of your reliability. A score of 750 or above is generally preferred for easy approval and better rates. Conversely, a gold loan is far more accessible to individuals with a low credit score or a limited credit history. Since the loan is secured by gold, lenders are less concerned with past credit behaviour. Eligibility is mainly determined by owning gold of acceptable purity (usually 18 carats and above) and being an Indian resident between 18 and 70 years old.
How Much Can You Borrow?
The loan amount you can receive differs significantly. With a gold loan, the amount is directly tied to the value of the gold you pledge. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has capped the Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio at 75% for most loans. This means you can get a loan of up to 75% of your gold's appraised value. Personal loan amounts, however, are based on your income and repayment capacity. For borrowers with a high, stable income and a strong credit profile, personal loans can offer much larger sums—sometimes up to ₹40 lakh or more—than what most people could secure with a typical gold loan.
Speed of Disbursal
When cash is needed urgently, speed matters. Gold loans are the clear winner here. Because the process primarily involves valuing the gold and minimal documentation (like ID and address proof), the loan can be disbursed in a matter of hours, sometimes in as little as 45 minutes. Personal loans, especially those processed through offline channels, can take longer. The process involves verifying income, checking credit history, and employment verification, which can take anywhere from a few hours for pre-approved digital loans to several days for standard applications.
Repayment Tenure and Flexibility
Personal loans generally offer longer and more structured repayment tenures, typically ranging from one to five years, sometimes even up to seven. This allows for smaller, more manageable EMIs. Gold loans, on the other hand, have shorter tenures, usually from a few months up to three years. They also offer more varied repayment options, including paying only the interest monthly and the principal at the end, or a one-time bullet repayment. The choice depends on whether you prefer the discipline of a fixed EMI or the flexibility of a shorter-term arrangement.
