The Absolute Essentials
These are the non-negotiable items for any trip. First, pack enough of your pet's regular food for the entire stay, plus a little extra in case of travel delays. Suddenly switching food can cause an upset stomach. Bring collapsible or travel-friendly
bowls for food and water. A sturdy leash and a well-fitting collar or harness are crucial. Most importantly, ensure your pet wears an ID tag with your current mobile number at all times. A tag is often the fastest way to be reunited if your pet gets lost in an unfamiliar place.
Comforts from Home
A new environment can be stressful for pets. Familiar scents and items can significantly reduce their anxiety. Pack their favourite bed or a soft blanket they love to sleep on. The familiar smell provides a sense of security in the strange new hotel room. Also, bring one or two of their favourite toys, like a chew toy or a soft crinkly toy. These not only keep them entertained but also help them feel more at ease. A tired and mentally stimulated pet is a calm pet.
Health and Safety Kit
Accidents and emergencies can happen anywhere. A basic pet first-aid kit is essential. It should include items like antiseptic wipes, bandages, gauze, and any specific medications your pet needs. Pack more than enough of their regular medication with clear dosage instructions. It's also wise to save the contact details of a local vet at your destination before you travel. And of course, never leave home without plenty of poop bags to clean up after your pet, both inside and outside the hotel.
Important Documents and Administration
While not all hotels in India will ask for paperwork, it is always better to be prepared. Carry a physical or digital copy of your pet's up-to-date vaccination records, especially for rabies. Some hotels may require this at check-in. Also, keep a copy of the hotel booking confirmation that explicitly mentions you are travelling with a pet. Before you book, always call the hotel directly to confirm their specific pet policy, including any restrictions on size, breed, or access to common areas. Policies can vary greatly, even within the same hotel chain.
For a Smooth and Clean Stay
Being a considerate guest ensures more hotels remain pet-friendly. Pack some cleaning supplies, like an enzyme cleaner and paper towels, just in case of an accident in the room. Bringing an old sheet or towel to cover any furniture your pet might jump on is also a great idea to keep the room clean and fur-free. If your pet sheds a lot, a lint roller can be a lifesaver. These small gestures show respect for the hotel's property and make the stay pleasant for everyone.
