Why Cats Crave Heights
Have you ever found your cat perched precariously atop a refrigerator, bookshelf, or wardrobe? This behaviour isn't just a quirky habit; it's deeply rooted in their DNA. In the wild, cats are both predators and prey. Being in a high place gives them a strategic
advantage, allowing them to survey their territory for potential threats and opportunities (like spotting the mailman or a bird outside the window). Height provides a sense of security and control. For a cat living in a multi-pet household, a high perch can also be a safe retreat from a pestering dog or another cat. It's their private space, a throne from which they can reign over their domestic kingdom.
The Benefits of Vertical Territory
In the limited floor space of an apartment, creating vertical territory is one of the most effective forms of environmental enrichment you can provide. This concept, often called 'catification', involves modifying your home to meet your cat's instinctual needs. Wall-mounted shelves, perches, and walkways effectively increase your cat's living area without taking up valuable floor space. This expansion encourages physical activity, as your cat will jump, climb, and balance, helping them stay fit and avoid boredom-related behaviours. A well-designed vertical world can reduce stress, build confidence in timid cats, and prevent conflicts over resources in homes with more than one feline.
Choosing the Perfect Cat Shelves
The market for cat shelves has exploded, but you can also go the DIY route. When selecting shelves, consider material, size, and texture. Solid wood shelves are durable and sturdy, while shelves covered in carpet or sisal rope offer a satisfying scratching surface. Ensure each shelf is wide and deep enough for your cat to lounge on comfortably—at least the length of your cat from nose to tail-base. You can buy individual perches or elaborate systems that include bridges and hammocks. Look for options with raised edges for an added sense of security. Aesthetics matter, too; many modern cat shelves are designed to blend seamlessly with your home decor, looking more like floating shelves than obvious pet furniture.
Strategic Placement for Maximum Fun
Where you put the shelves is just as important as the shelves themselves. A prime location is near a window, giving your cat a front-row seat to the daily drama of birds, squirrels, and passersby—what cat behaviourists call 'cat TV'. You can also use shelves to create a 'superhighway' around a room, allowing your cat to travel from one point to another without touching the floor. Arrange them like stairs, with about 12-16 inches of vertical and horizontal distance between them, to make climbing easy and safe. This encourages a natural pathway for exploration. Avoid placing shelves directly above areas where you sit, like your favourite spot on the sofa, unless you're prepared for the occasional stray cat hair.
Safety and Installation Essentials
Safety is non-negotiable. Always mount shelves directly into wall studs using strong brackets and screws. Drywall alone is not strong enough to support a jumping cat. Use a stud finder to locate them before you drill. Pay close attention to the weight limit specified by the manufacturer, and remember to factor in the dynamic force of a cat leaping onto the shelf. Ensure the surface is not too slippery; you can add a non-slip mat, a piece of carpet, or a textured finish if needed. Once installed, give the shelves a firm tug to ensure they are completely secure before letting your cat explore.
Encouraging Your Feline Explorer
Some cats will take to their new vertical world immediately, while others may be more hesitant. Never force your cat onto the shelves. Instead, use positive reinforcement to pique their curiosity. Place their favourite treats, a sprinkle of catnip, or a beloved toy on the lowest shelf to entice them. Use a laser pointer or feather wand to guide them up the path you've created. As they become more comfortable, move the incentive to higher shelves. With a little patience and encouragement, they'll soon be enjoying their premium apartment views from their new favourite spot.
