What Is the New Package Visa?
Saudi Arabia has launched an innovative pilot initiative called the Package Visa, designed to streamline the entire process of planning a trip to the Kingdom. Instead of booking flights on one site, a hotel on another, and then navigating a separate visa
application, this system allows travellers to purchase a bundled package. This package includes a confirmed round-trip flight, accommodation at a licensed hotel, and the electronic tourist visa itself, all processed in a single transaction through an approved travel agency. The program is part of a wider push to make the country more accessible, removing common travel hurdles and reducing paperwork.
How Does It Actually Work?
The process is designed for simplicity. Travellers from eligible countries can book their trip through an accredited travel provider that offers these integrated packages. Currently, platforms like Almosafer and Reserval are among the first to be authorised. After selecting and paying for a package digitally, the system gets to work. Within a maximum of 48 hours, the electronic visa is issued and delivered via email along with travel insurance and other documents. This completely removes the need to visit a Saudi embassy or consulate for a visa application. The visa issued is a single-entry tourist permit, valid for three months, allowing a stay of up to 90 days.
A Game-Changer for Indian Travellers
For Indian citizens, this development is particularly significant as India is one of the first countries included in the pilot program. Other countries in the initial phase include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, and Mexico. The new system promises a much smoother journey for the millions of Indians who travel to Saudi Arabia for tourism, business, or to visit family. The package visa can also be used to perform Umrah, though it cannot be used for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. By simplifying the complex logistics of visa applications and travel booking, the initiative makes a trip to explore Saudi's growing list of attractions a much more straightforward prospect.
Part of a Much Bigger Plan
This Package Visa is not an isolated initiative; it's a key component of Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030. This national strategy aims to diversify the Kingdom's economy beyond oil, with tourism identified as a central pillar for future growth. The goal is to attract 150 million domestic and international visitors annually by 2030 and have the tourism sector contribute over 10% to the nation's GDP. To achieve this, the country has been investing billions in massive new tourism projects like NEOM and the Red Sea Global developments, as well as hosting major international sporting and entertainment events. Easier visa processes, including the pre-existing e-visa and transit visa options, are fundamental to hitting these targets.
What to Expect Next
While the Package Visa is currently in a pilot phase with a limited number of countries and accredited agencies, the intention is to expand it. The success of this initial rollout will likely lead to more countries being added to the eligibility list and more travel companies being authorised to offer these bundles. This move is part of a broader digital transformation of the country's visa services, anchored by the unified KSA VISA platform which aims to consolidate all visa-related processes. For travellers, this signals a clear trend: visiting Saudi Arabia is set to become progressively easier, more efficient, and more integrated, transforming how people plan and experience their journey to the heart of the Middle East.
