The Rise of the 'Subscription Trap'
From streaming services and music apps to fitness guides and online courses, our digital lives are built on subscriptions. UPI AutoPay makes signing up seamless — a one-time approval and the money is debited automatically. However, this convenience has
a downside: the ‘subscription trap’. It's easy to sign up for a free trial or a service you only need once, and then completely forget about it. These small, recurring charges, often called 'zombie subscriptions', continue to drain your bank account long after you've stopped using the service. Because the individual amounts are often low, from ₹99 to ₹499, they fly under the radar, but cumulatively, they can represent a significant and unnecessary monthly expense.
What Exactly is a UPI Mandate?
When you enable AutoPay, you are creating a UPI 'mandate'. This is a standing instruction you give your bank, through a UPI app, to allow a specific merchant to debit a certain amount of money from your account at a regular frequency. Governed by rules set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India, this system is designed to be secure and transparent. You receive notifications before a debit, and more importantly, you have the power to view, pause, or cancel these mandates at any time, directly from your app.
How to Find Your Active Mandates
Finding these hidden charges is the first step to taking back control. The process is similar across most major UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. You generally need to open your app and navigate to a section in your profile or settings often labelled 'AutoPay', 'Mandates', or 'Subscriptions'. On Google Pay: Tap your profile picture, then select 'Autopay'. You'll see tabs for 'Live', 'Pending', and 'Completed' mandates. On PhonePe: Tap your profile picture, go to the 'Payment Management' section, and select 'AutoPay'. This will show you a list of all active recurring payments set up through the app. * On Paytm: Use the search bar to find 'UPI & Payment Settings' or a similar option, then look for 'Automatic Payments' or 'My Payments' to view your active mandates. It's crucial to check every UPI app you use, as mandates are typically only visible in the app where they were created.
The Audit: What to Keep, What to Cancel
Once you have the list of all your active mandates, it's time for a quick review. For each subscription, ask yourself a few simple questions: Do I still use this service regularly? Is it providing value equal to its cost? Have I subscribed to multiple services that do the same thing (e.g., two music apps)? Is there a free or cheaper alternative available? Be honest and ruthless. If you haven't used a service in the last month, it’s a strong candidate for cancellation. The goal isn't to eliminate all subscriptions, but to ensure you are only paying for services you genuinely use and value.
Cancelling Unwanted Mandates: A Simple Process
Stopping an AutoPay mandate is designed to be straightforward. After navigating to your list of active mandates, simply select the one you wish to stop. You should see an option to 'Cancel', 'Revoke', or 'Delete' the mandate. To finalize the cancellation, you will likely need to enter your UPI PIN as a security measure. After confirming, the status of the mandate should change to 'Cancelled' or 'Revoked'. It's important to do this at least 24-48 hours before the next payment is due to ensure the debit does not go through. Remember, cancelling the UPI mandate stops future payments, but it does not cancel your service with the merchant or issue refunds for past payments.
