Start With Colour Theory
Before you pick up a brush, a basic understanding of the colour wheel is your greatest asset. The goal is to coordinate, not to perfectly match. For a harmonious effect, you can choose analogous colours—shades that sit next to each other on the colour wheel,
like pairing a pink outfit with berry tones on the eyes. For a bolder, more striking look, opt for complementary colours, which are opposite each other. For instance, if your outfit is a rich green, a touch of copper or bronze eyeshadow can create a beautiful contrast. A monochromatic look, using different shades and tones of the same colour as your outfit, can also be incredibly chic. For example, pair a light purple dress with a darker purple eyeshadow to create contrast while staying in the same colour family.
Prep and Prime for Perfection
The secret to vibrant, long-lasting eyeshadow is a well-prepped eyelid. Always start with an eyeshadow primer. A primer creates a smooth canvas for the eyeshadow to adhere to, preventing it from creasing or fading throughout the day's festivities. It also makes the colours appear more pigmented and true to how they look in the palette. Apply a thin layer of primer from your lash line up to your brow bone. If you don't have a primer, a small amount of concealer set with a neutral powder will also do the trick, ensuring your colourful creation stays put from the morning puja to the late-night celebrations.
Pick Your Hero Shade from Your Outfit
Look at your festive attire. Is there a dominant colour, or are there smaller, intricate details with a pop of colour, like the embroidery on a lehenga or the border of a saree? Use these details as your inspiration. If you're wearing a neutral outfit, you have the freedom to be more dramatic with your eye makeup. However, if your outfit is already very bold and patterned, it's often best to choose a more subtle, complementary shade for your eyes to keep the overall look balanced. For Indian festive wear, warm tones like bronze, gold, and copper are incredibly flattering and versatile, pairing beautifully with traditional jewellery and a wide range of outfit colours.
A Simple Technique for a Colourful Look
You don't need complicated techniques to achieve a beautiful result. Start by applying a neutral, medium-toned eyeshadow in your crease with a fluffy brush; this is your transition shade and will help all the other colours blend seamlessly. Next, take your main colour—the one that harmonises with your outfit—and pat it onto the centre of your eyelid with a flat brush for maximum impact. To add dimension, apply a deeper shade (like a dark brown or a deeper version of your lid colour) to the outer corner of your eye in a 'V' shape. The key is to take your time and build the colour gradually.
Blending is Your Best Friend
The difference between a good and a great eyeshadow look is blending. After placing your colours, take a clean, fluffy blending brush and use light, circular motions along the edges of the shades to diffuse any harsh lines. You want the colours to transition smoothly into one another. Specifically, blend the transition shade in the crease to soften the look, and blend the dark outer corner shade inwards towards the lid colour. This will create a professional, gradient effect rather than distinct blocks of colour, making your eyes the sophisticated star of the show.
Complete the Look
Finish your eye look with a crisp line of kajal or eyeliner and a generous coat of mascara to define your lashes. A touch of a light, shimmery shade or highlighter on the inner corner of your eye and just below the arch of your eyebrow will make your eyes appear brighter and more awake. Remember to balance your look; if you've gone for bold, colourful eyes, consider a more neutral or soft lipstick shade. Conversely, if your eye makeup is more subdued, a classic red or berry lip can be the perfect festive statement.
