India's flagship school meal programme, PM POSHAN (Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman), aims to improve the nutritional status of millions of children in government and government-aided schools. The Centre sets clear nutritional targets: primary school children should
receive meals providing around 450 calories and 12 grams of protein, while upper-primary students should get 700 calories and 20 grams of protein. However, the responsibility for planning menus and procuring ingredients largely rests with state governments and UT administrations. This structure is designed to accommodate local dietary habits, cultural preferences, and the availability of regional produce, ensuring the meals are both nutritious and well-received.
What 'Equivalent Replacement' Means
The key takeaway from the recent guidance is the reinforced principle of flexibility. It's not about mandating specific foods nationwide, but about meeting nutritional benchmarks. An 'equivalent replacement' is a substitution that provides a comparable nutritional profile, particularly in terms of protein and calories.
