A Major Leap in System Capacity
Indian Railways has initiated a significant overhaul of its nearly 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS). This next-generation platform, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), marks a pivotal shift from older servers
to a modern, cloud-based infrastructure. The numbers behind this upgrade are staggering. The old system could handle approximately 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new PRS is engineered to process over 1,50,000 bookings per minute—a nearly five-fold increase in capacity. This isn't just about booking; the capacity for passenger enquiries, such as checking PNR status or seat availability, is also set to jump tenfold, from 4,00,000 to over 40,00,000 enquiries per minute.
What the Upgrade Means for You
For the average passenger, this technical upgrade translates into tangible benefits. The primary goal is to reduce the dreaded 'please try again' messages and system crashes, especially during high-demand periods. With nearly 89% of reserved tickets now booked online, the old system was straining under the load. The new PRS is designed for enhanced stability, meaning a smoother and faster booking process. This increased capacity significantly improves the chances of successfully securing a ticket during peak hours, particularly for popular routes and during festival seasons. The entire process, from searching for trains to making a payment, is designed to be more seamless.
A Less Stressful Tatkal Experience
Perhaps the most anticipated benefit is the potential for a less chaotic Tatkal booking experience. The Tatkal window creates a massive, concentrated spike in traffic that frequently overwhelmed the previous system, leading to frustration for millions. With the new PRS's ability to handle a much higher volume of simultaneous transactions, the platform is expected to manage these peak loads far more efficiently. While the immense demand for Tatkal tickets won't disappear, the system's ability to serve more users at once should make the process fairer and less of a lottery. Early data from the beta website, which went live in July 2026, has already shown a measurable improvement in the speed of Tatkal bookings.
The Phased Rollout Plan
This massive transition is not happening overnight. Indian Railways is adopting a phased migration strategy to ensure minimal disruption for passengers. The rollout began in August 2026, with the new system being tested gradually under different traffic loads. Officials have stated that trains will be shifted to the upgraded infrastructure progressively. This cautious, layer-by-layer approach allows CRIS to monitor the system's performance and ensure its stability at a national scale before the nearly four-decade-old PRS is fully decommissioned. A new beta version of the IRCTC website, which is part of this transition, is already available for users.
