An Unrelenting Heatwave
Uttar Pradesh continues to reel under severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures consistently soaring. On June 23, the highest maximum temperature in the state was a blistering 43.8°C, recorded at Banda in eastern UP. The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) has issued persistent heatwave alerts for the region, particularly for East Uttar Pradesh, forecasting these conditions to continue until June 28. These extreme temperatures, markedly above normal for this time of year, pose significant health risks, especially for vulnerable populations like children, prompting authorities to take protective measures.
Official Closure and Reopening Dates
In response to the dangerous heat, the Uttar Pradesh government has extended summer vacations for all schools under the Basic Education Council and other recognised institutions. Students, who were briefly back in some schools, will now remain on vacation until June 24, 2026. Regular classes for all students are scheduled to officially resume on Tuesday, June 25, 2026. This decision, made under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to prioritise the safety and health of schoolchildren amid the rising temperatures.
A Standardised Academic Calendar
The government has also used this opportunity to standardise the academic calendar across the state. Going forward, summer vacations will be observed annually from May 20 to June 24, with the new academic session commencing on June 25. Officials stated this move will bring uniformity and eliminate the need for individual district administrations to repeatedly declare local holidays during heatwaves, providing more predictability for parents and schools. While the order applies to all government and recognised schools, many private schools affiliated with CBSE or ICSE boards often align with state directives during extreme weather.
Staff to Report Early for Preparations
While students will enjoy the extended break, all teaching and non-teaching staff, including teachers, Shiksha Mitras, and instructors, are required to report to their schools from June 22 to June 24. This period is dedicated to making all necessary preparations for a smooth start to the academic session. Responsibilities include handling enrollment drives, arranging textbooks, ensuring mid-day meal facilities are ready, cleaning premises, and making sure all facilities like drinking water, electricity, and smart classrooms are functional for when classes resume on June 25.
How to Track Reopening Information
Given that weather patterns can be unpredictable, it is crucial for parents to stay informed about any potential changes to the reopening schedule. The most reliable sources for information are official channels. Parents should monitor communications from their children's schools, such as SMS alerts or updates on school-specific apps. Additionally, the official website of the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council (UPBEC) and announcements from district-level education officers are key sources for verified updates. Relying on these official sources rather than unverified social media forwards is essential for accurate information.
