The Thrill of a Moonlit Ascent
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is more than just a hike; it's an experience that begins in the dead of night. The trek typically starts around 4 a.m., plunging you into the quiet wilderness with only the beam of your torch and the starry sky
to guide you. This nocturnal journey is a sensory delight—the cool air, the sound of crickets, and the shared anticipation with fellow trekkers create an atmosphere of pure adventure. The trail, which is roughly 8 kilometres up and down, is considered moderately difficult, involving steep inclines and rocky sections that keep you engaged and focused. The physical challenge of navigating the path in the dark is precisely what makes the reward at the summit so much sweeter.
A Walk Through History to the Summit
As you climb, you're also walking through a piece of Karnataka's history. The peak of Skandagiri holds the ruins of a fortress built by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. It served as a stronghold during his battles against the British before being abandoned in 1791. Today, nature has reclaimed much of the structure, with crumbling walls and an ancient, abandoned Shiva temple adding a mystical aura to the summit. Reaching these ruins as the first light of dawn approaches connects you not just with nature, but with the centuries of history etched into the hillside. The trek is a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.
The Grand Finale: A Sunrise Above the Clouds
The primary reason trekkers embark on this pre-dawn journey is the spectacular sunrise. Skandagiri is famous for a phenomenon often described as a 'sea of clouds'. From an altitude of about 1,350 metres, you look down upon a thick, white blanket of clouds filling the valleys below. As the sun begins to rise, it paints this cloud bed in hues of orange, gold, and purple, creating a breathtaking, almost surreal vista. On a clear day, the magnificent Nandi Hills can be seen in the distance. This magical view, which makes you feel as if you're floating above the world, is what cements Skandagiri's reputation as one of the most unforgettable sunrise spots near the city.
How to Plan Your Skandagiri Adventure
A trek to Skandagiri requires some planning. It is located in a reserve forest, and booking is mandatory through the official Karnataka Ecotourism website. Only a limited number of permits are issued each day, so it's essential to book in advance, especially for weekends. The best time to visit is during the winter months, from October to February, when the skies are clear and the chances of witnessing the sea of clouds are highest. Treks during the monsoon are generally avoided as the rocky paths become slippery and dangerous. Trekkers are advised to wear sturdy shoes with good grip, carry a powerful torch or headlamp, and pack at least two litres of water and some energy-boosting snacks, as there are no shops on the trail. Dressing in layers is also wise, as it can be chilly at the summit before the sun comes up.
