Ahmedabad-Dholera Semi High-Speed Rail
One of the most anticipated projects is India's first indigenously developed semi-high-speed rail corridor, connecting Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). Approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2026, this 134-km double-line track
is a game-changer for the region. It will provide a crucial, fast link between Ahmedabad, the Dholera SIR industrial hub, the upcoming Dholera International Airport, and the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal. The project aims to make same-day return journeys between Ahmedabad and the burgeoning industrial zone a comfortable reality, bolstering both business and tourism. While the target for completion is set for 2030-31, its approval marks a significant step towards future-proofing the state's transport network.
Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway
A key portion of the massive Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the Vadodara-Mumbai stretch is nearing completion and promises to dramatically cut travel time between Gujarat and the financial capital. This eight-lane, access-controlled expressway is expected to reduce the journey from around eight hours to just four. The Maharashtra section of the corridor was anticipated to open by the end of August 2026, creating a seamless, high-speed route for both passenger vehicles and commercial freight. This will not only make personal travel faster and safer but also provide a major boost to logistics by improving connectivity between Gujarat's industrial centers and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai.
Upgrades on National Highways 48 and 53
Major upgrades are also underway on some of Gujarat's most critical road arteries. As part of a large infrastructure push announced in September 2026, several key projects on NH-48 and NH-53 were launched. These include the six-laning of the busy Kamrej-Chalthan section of NH-48 and the construction of additional bridges over the Narmada and Tapi rivers on the Vadodara-Surat section. Furthermore, new grade-separated structures and flyovers are being built at key junctions like Abhava, Mindhola, and Khajod on NH-53 to eliminate bottlenecks and improve traffic flow. These enhancements are specifically designed to tackle congestion and improve safety on some of the state's most heavily used highway corridors.
New and Enhanced Rail Lines
Beyond high-speed projects, the conventional rail network is also seeing significant investment to increase capacity and connectivity. Foundation stones were laid for several projects in September 2026, including adding third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam. This will significantly increase passenger and freight capacity and improve rail links between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. In another important development, the new Jobat-Tanda Road rail line was dedicated to the nation, connecting remote and tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national network for the first time. A new passenger train service between Vadodara and Tanda Road was also flagged off, benefiting commuters across several districts.
Ahmedabad-Mumbai High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train)
While not entirely new, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, popularly known as the Bullet Train project, continues to make substantial progress and remains a cornerstone of future travel. With trial runs anticipated in 2027, the project is steadily moving towards its goal of connecting the two major cities. Work is advancing rapidly on viaducts, piers, and stations across Gujarat. The first section in Gujarat, between Surat and Bilimora, is targeted to be operational in 2027. Once fully completed, the 508-km corridor is expected to transform inter-city travel, bringing modern rail technology and enhanced passenger amenities to the region.
