For decades, a UK visa meant a physical sticker, or vignette, carefully placed in your passport. That era is now over. As part of a major initiative to create a fully digital border, the UK has been phasing out these physical documents. Starting in 2026,
successful visa applicants from India will no longer receive a sticker. Instead, their permission to travel is recorded as a secure electronic visa, or eVisa. This change is designed to make the immigration process more secure, efficient, and streamlined, aligning the UK with global digital travel trends. More than 500,000 visas were granted to Indian nationals in the year ending March 2026, making this a significant update for one of the UK's largest visitor groups.
What Exactly is a UK eVisa?
An eVisa isn't a document you print out or a file you save to your phone; it's a digital record of your immigration status linked directly to your passport. This electronic permission is stored in a secure online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Once your visa application is approved, you will receive an email guiding you to create a UKVI account to access your eVisa. This digital status confirms the type of visa you hold, its validity dates, and any conditions attached, such as the right to work or study. It eliminates the risk of a physical sticker being lost, stolen, or damaged.
The Application Process Remains Familiar
While the final output has changed, the initial steps for applying for a UK visa from India remain largely the same. Indian citizens must still identify the correct visa category for their trip—be it for tourism, business, study, or family visits—and complete the application form on the official GOV.UK website. Applicants will also need to attend a scheduled appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide their biometric information, which includes fingerprints and a photograph. The key difference is what happens after a decision is made: instead of waiting for your passport to be returned with a sticker, you'll receive a notification to access your digital status online.
How Travel Works Without a Sticker
The most common question for travellers is how they will prove their right to enter the UK without a physical visa. The new system relies on electronic checks. When you check in for your flight, the airline's systems will digitally verify your permission to travel with the UK Home Office. If your details don't match or an eVisa isn't linked to your passport, you could be denied boarding. Upon arrival in the UK, Border Force officers will scan your passport to see your digital immigration status. This makes it crucial to ensure that the passport you travel with is the same one linked to your UKVI account and that all personal details are accurate.
Documents to Carry on Your Journey
Even in this new digital age, it's wise to carry some documentation as a backup. While not mandatory, travellers are advised to have a printed or electronic copy of the visa approval email received from UKVI. It is also recommended to be able to access your UKVI account profile page, should you need to show it. Most importantly, you must carry the valid passport that you used for your visa application, as this is the key to accessing your digital record at every stage of your journey. Having these items in your hand luggage can help resolve any potential issues at check-in or the border quickly.
