The Final Link in a Monumental Project
The introduction of Vande Bharat services to Srinagar is the culmination of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental engineering project that has been decades in the making. The 272-km line was declared a National Project in 2002
and aimed to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India’s railway network. The challenging Himalayan terrain required the construction of numerous tunnels and bridges, including the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge. This bridge stands taller than the Eiffel Tower and is an engineering marvel designed to withstand the region's harsh weather and seismic activity. The completion of the final, most challenging Katra-Banihal section in mid-2025 paved the way for direct train services to the valley, a goal first envisioned over a century ago. The first Vande Bharat trains were flagged off in June 2025, finally making the dream of seamless rail connectivity a reality.
An All-Weather Lifeline for the Valley
For years, the Kashmir Valley's primary connection to the rest of the country has been the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a route notoriously prone to disruptions. Landslides, heavy snowfall, and avalanches frequently shut down the highway for extended periods, isolating the region, disrupting supply chains, and causing immense hardship for residents, tourists, and security forces. The railway provides a reliable, all-weather alternative. This ensures the uninterrupted movement of people and essential goods like fuel, food grains, and medical supplies throughout the year. Travel time between Jammu and Srinagar, which could take many uncertain hours by road, is significantly reduced to a comfortable and predictable train journey of just a few hours.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economies
Improved connectivity is expected to be a game-changer for Kashmir's tourism industry. The comfort, speed, and safety of the Vande Bharat Express make the 'Paradise on Earth' more accessible to tourists from across India. Easier travel is set to boost visitor numbers to popular destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, especially during the winter months when road access is difficult. This influx of tourists directly benefits the local economy, creating jobs and supporting hotels, homestays, handicraft sellers, and other businesses dependent on tourism. Furthermore, the railway provides a cost-effective and efficient way for local producers to transport their goods, such as Kashmir's famous apples, saffron, and handicrafts, to wider national markets, fetching better prices and reducing spoilage.
Expanding Services to Meet Demand
The initial Vande Bharat services, launched in June 2025, have been met with overwhelming demand, reportedly running at full occupancy since their inception. Originally running between Katra and Srinagar, the services were extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026 to provide a direct link. In response to this high demand and requests from the public, Indian Railways has already approved a third Vande Bharat train for the Jammu-Srinagar route. This new service will include a stop at Udhampur, further enhancing connectivity for the region. To accommodate the high passenger traffic, the number of coaches on the existing trains was also increased from 16 to 20, demonstrating the immediate and significant impact of the new rail link.
Strategic Importance and National Integration
Beyond its economic and social benefits, the USBRL project holds immense strategic importance. The railway provides a fast and reliable mode of transport for the movement of security forces and military supplies to the sensitive border regions, bolstering India's defence infrastructure. The project is also a powerful symbol of national integration. By physically connecting the valley with the rest of the country in a way that was never before possible, the railway fosters a greater sense of unity and shared progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that the phrase 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari' has now become a reality for the railway network, marking a historic moment for the nation.
