A New Era of Overnight Travel
Indian Railways is set to launch its second Vande Bharat Sleeper service, and the first in southern India, connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai. This move marks a significant step in modernising long-distance overnight travel in the country. Unlike the chair-car
versions designed for daytime trips, the sleeper variant is tailored for journeys spanning 800 to 1,200 kilometres, offering a premium alternative to existing overnight trains. The inaugural run for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route is proposed for November 1, 2026, to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava, although the start date for regular commercial service is yet to be announced. This new service follows the successful launch of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Howrah-Kamakhya route in January 2026, which has seen consistently high occupancy.
Slashing Journey Times for Professionals
For the thousands of professionals commuting between these two economic powerhouses, the new train is a game-changer. Currently, the primary direct train, the Udyan Express, takes a gruelling 24 hours to cover the 1,118-kilometre distance. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to slash this travel time to just 16 hours, a reduction of up to eight hours. This dramatic time saving makes overnight train travel a far more viable and efficient option compared to the lengthy bus journeys (around 20 hours) or even flights, once airport check-in and travel to and from city centres are factored in. By departing late in the evening and arriving the following afternoon, it allows for a productive day before and after travel, directly competing with the convenience once only offered by air travel for business trips.
What to Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed for comfort and a premium passenger experience. Each 16-coach train will have 823 berths distributed across First AC, AC Two-Tier, and AC Three-Tier classes. The interiors feature cushioned berths, improved ladder designs for easier access to upper berths, individual reading lights, and charging points for every passenger. Amenities are set to include automatic doors, fully sealed gangways to reduce noise and maintain temperature, bio-vacuum toilets, and a centralized coach monitoring system. For added convenience, First AC passengers will have access to hot water showers. The entire train is air-conditioned and equipped with CCTV for enhanced safety, aiming to provide a comfortable and secure environment for overnight travel.
Route, Timings, and Cost
According to the proposed schedule, the train will depart from Bengaluru at 10:00 PM and arrive at Mumbai's CSMT at 1:50 PM the next day. The return journey is planned to leave CSMT at 10:30 PM, reaching Bengaluru at 2:50 PM. The service will likely run six days a week. The route will connect key stations across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, including Kalaburagi, Solapur, and Pune. While official fares are yet to be released, reports estimate that tickets could range from approximately ₹2,600 to ₹4,250, depending on the travel class. This positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a premium service, targeting passengers willing to pay more for speed and comfort.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Railways
The introduction of the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper is a key part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to modernise its network and capture the premium travel market. These indigenously manufactured trains, a flagship of the 'Make in India' initiative, are not only faster but also more profitable for the railways, particularly in the AC travel segments. By offering a reliable and high-quality alternative to flights and road travel, the Vande Bharat network is boosting regional connectivity, tourism, and business. The expansion into long-distance sleeper routes represents the next logical step, aiming to redefine overnight journeys and set a new standard for rail travel across the nation.
