On the evening of September 7, 2026, scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) held their breath as they executed a critical command. For over 20 minutes, the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) on the EOS-05 satellite fired precisely, pushing
the spacecraft into its final intended orbit nearly 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. This was the last of three carefully planned orbit-raising manoeuvres since the satellite’s launch on September 4. Think of it like a driver merging onto a highway; the satellite was launched into a preliminary orbit and then used its own engines in a series of 'burns' to climb higher and circularise its path, finally settling into its designated operational slot. ISRO has confirmed that the satellite is healthy and performing as expected after this final nudge.
What Exactly Is the EOS-05 Satellite?
EOS-05 is an advanced Earth Observation Satellite. Unlike most remote sensing satellites that orbit just a few hundred kilometres up and race across the sky, EOS-05 is designed for a special position: a geosynchronous orbit. At this high altitude, the satellite's orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. This allows it to 'hover' over the Indian subcontinent, providing continuous watch over a vast area. It is India's first imaging satellite designed specifically for this high-altitude orbit, giving it the unique ability to provide near-real-time imagery of the entire country. According to its design, it can capture an image of any selected area every five minutes and the entire Indian landmass every half hour.
A Game-Changer for India
The capabilities of EOS-05 are a significant leap for India's strategic and developmental goals. The satellite has powerful dual-use applications, serving both civilian and defence purposes. For civilians, it will be a crucial tool for disaster management, providing rapid updates during cyclones, floods, and forest fires. The Journey from Launch to Orbit
Achieving this orbit was a multi-step process. The journey began in the early hours of September 4, when the powerful GSLV-F17 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The rocket’s job was not to place the satellite directly into its final orbit, but to deliver it to a highly elliptical 'Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit'. From there, the satellite itself took over. The three subsequent engine firings were meticulously calculated to raise its lowest point (perigee) and highest point (apogee) until it achieved the near-circular path required for its mission. This successful deployment is particularly significant for ISRO, as a previous attempt to launch a similar satellite, EOS-03, ended in failure in 2021 due to a launch vehicle anomaly.
What Happens Next?
While EOS-05 has reached its final orbital home, its work is just beginning. In the coming days and weeks, ISRO engineers will conduct a series of tests to check and calibrate the satellite’s complex imaging payloads and other systems. This involves turning on the cameras, ensuring all sensors are functioning correctly, and verifying that the data being transmitted is accurate. Once these checkouts are complete and the satellite is declared fully functional, it will be officially commissioned into service.
