The Allure of Instant Festive Credit
As festivals approach, banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) roll out aggressive marketing campaigns. You receive SMS alerts, emails, and app notifications about pre-approved personal loans with attractive features like special interest rates
or waived processing fees. These offers are designed for quick disbursal, often requiring minimal documentation, making them incredibly seductive when you're planning big-ticket purchases like electronics, jewellery, or a home renovation. The convenience is undeniable, but it's crucial to remember that these are still loans with binding terms. The ease of access can sometimes mask the true cost of borrowing, leading you into a debt trap if you're not careful.
Look Beyond the Headline Interest Rate
The most prominent feature of any loan offer is the interest rate, and festive deals often advertise lower-than-usual rates. However, the interest rate is only one component of the total cost. Lenders have several other fees and charges that are not always highlighted upfront. These additional costs can significantly increase your financial burden over the loan's tenure. What appears to be a cheap loan can become expensive once all the associated charges are factored in. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of the entire loan agreement, not just the interest rate, is essential before you commit.
Common Hidden Charges to Uncover
To protect yourself, you need to know what to look for in the fine print. Here are some of the most common charges that can inflate the cost of your loan: 1. Processing Fees and GST: This is a standard fee charged for processing your loan application. It typically ranges from 1% to 3% of the loan amount and is often deducted before the funds are disbursed. This means if you take a loan of ₹1 lakh with a 2% processing fee, you only receive ₹98,000. Additionally, an 18% GST is applicable on this fee, further reducing the net amount. 2. Prepayment or Foreclosure Penalties: If you receive a bonus and want to repay your loan early, the bank might penalise you for it. These charges, known as prepayment or foreclosure penalties, compensate the lender for the future interest they lose. Charges can be as high as 2% to 5% of the outstanding principal. Many lenders also have a lock-in period (often 6-12 months) during which you cannot prepay the loan at all. 3. Late Payment Fees: Missing an EMI payment due date attracts a penalty. This can be a fixed amount or a percentage of the overdue EMI, often with added GST. Regular delays can also negatively impact your credit score, making future borrowing more difficult and expensive. 4. Insurance Premiums: Sometimes, lenders bundle a loan protection insurance policy with the personal loan, presenting it as mandatory. While having insurance is wise, the premium is added to your loan amount, increasing your EMI. You should always check if the insurance is optional and compare its cost with other providers. 5. Other Miscellaneous Charges: Be aware of other smaller fees like documentation charges, verification fees, and EMI bounce charges (if the automatic payment fails due to insufficient funds), which can range from ₹300 to ₹1000 per instance.
Your Pre-Signature Checklist
Before you accept any pre-approved offer, arm yourself with the right questions. Don't hesitate to ask the lender for complete clarity. Here’s a checklist to guide you: What is the final interest rate, and is it fixed or floating? What is the exact processing fee, and is it negotiable? What is the net amount that will be credited to my account after all deductions? What are the prepayment and foreclosure charges, and what is the lock-in period? Are there any loan cancellation charges if I change my mind after approval? Is the bundled insurance policy mandatory? If so, what is the premium? What are the penalties for late payment or EMI bounce? Ask for a detailed loan agreement and schedule of charges. Read every clause carefully before signing.
