A Major Boost for Regional Travel
The Railway Board has officially approved the new Vande Bharat Express service between Surat in Gujarat and Udaipur City in Rajasthan. This is a significant development, as it will be Surat's first Vande Bharat train and Gujarat's sixth such premium service.
The new train, operated by Western Railway, aims to slash travel time and provide a modern, comfortable option for passengers travelling between the two states for business, tourism, or personal reasons. The service replaces the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, extending the route to provide a more comprehensive connection deep into South Gujarat.
Route, Stoppages, and Schedule
The train, numbered 26903/26904, will cover the roughly 690-kilometre distance in approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes. It is scheduled to run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. From Surat, train number 26903 will depart at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. Key commercial stoppages along the route include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, ensuring connectivity to several important towns and cities along the way.
The Modern Vande Bharat Experience
Passengers on the Surat-Udaipur route can expect the signature Vande Bharat experience. These indigenously manufactured trains are designed for a maximum speed of 160-180 km/h, though operational speed depends on track conditions. The eight-coach composition features airplane-style interiors, large windows for panoramic views, and rotatable seats. Onboard amenities include Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance, automatic doors, a sophisticated fire detection system, and bio-vacuum toilets with sensory taps. A key focus is passenger comfort, with an advanced air conditioning system, and excellent catering services. The trains are also equipped with the KAVACH automatic train protection system to enhance safety.
Unlocking Tourism and Economic Growth
This new direct link is poised to deliver a significant economic uplift to both regions. For Surat, known as the Diamond City and a major textile hub, it offers streamlined access to the markets and labour force of southern Rajasthan. For Udaipur, a world-renowned tourist destination, the train provides a fast and convenient option for travellers from South Gujarat, a region with a large number of tourists who frequent Rajasthan for holidays and destination weddings. By connecting commercial centres with tourist hotspots, Vande Bharat trains have been shown to boost local economies, supporting ancillary industries like hospitality, transport, and retail. This service is expected to strengthen social and trade relations between the two vibrant states.
Booking and What to Expect
Tickets for the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express will be available through the standard Indian Railways booking channels, including the IRCTC website and mobile app. The service will offer two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with fares set at a premium compared to other trains on the route, reflecting the speed and enhanced amenities. Primary maintenance for the train will be handled at Surat, ensuring operational efficiency. The introduction of this service, expected to begin before the Navratri festival, has generated considerable excitement among prospective travellers in both Gujarat and Rajasthan.
