Start with the Right Cleanser
The foundation of shine control is proper cleansing. During the monsoon, increased humidity can lead to more oil and sweat, which clogs pores. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle, foaming or gel-based cleanser to remove excess oil and grime without
stripping your skin. Look for products containing ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil, which are effective at managing oil and preventing breakouts common in humid weather. However, avoid over-washing, as this can trick your skin into producing even more oil to compensate.
Don’t Skip Moisturiser
It might seem counterintuitive to moisturise oily skin, especially when it's humid, but skipping this step is a common mistake that can backfire. When your skin is dehydrated, it can overproduce sebum to compensate, leading to more shine. The key is to choose the right formula. Opt for a lightweight, non-comedogenic, and water or gel-based moisturiser. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid will provide essential hydration without clogging pores or feeling heavy on the skin.
Use Sunscreen, Even on Cloudy Days
Don’t let the cloud cover fool you; harmful UV rays can easily penetrate through and damage your skin. Sunscreen is non-negotiable year-round. For rainy days, choose a lightweight, non-greasy, or gel-based formula with at least SPF 30. This will protect your skin from sun damage without contributing to a greasy feel or clogging your pores.
Incorporate a Clay Mask
A weekly clay mask can work wonders for oily and acne-prone skin during the monsoon. Clay masks, such as those with Fuller's earth (Multani mitti), are excellent for absorbing excess oil, drawing out impurities, and deep cleaning pores. Using a purifying mask once or twice a week helps to keep breakouts at bay and maintains a clearer, more balanced complexion when humidity is high.
Choose Your Makeup Wisely
Heavy makeup is a recipe for clogged pores and a melting disaster in humid weather. If you choose to wear makeup, opt for lightweight and long-wearing products. A mattifying primer can create a smooth base and help control shine. Instead of heavy liquid foundations, consider a powder-based foundation or a lightweight CC cream. For touch-ups throughout the day, blotting papers are your best friend. They lift away excess oil without disturbing your makeup. A final spritz of a makeup setting spray can also help lock everything in place.
Stay Hydrated and Mind Your Diet
What you put inside your body reflects on your skin. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin healthy from within. While it's tempting to indulge in fried snacks during the rains, an excess of oily food can trigger more oil production and breakouts. Instead, incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, and probiotics like yogurt into your diet to help keep your skin balanced and glowing.
