For decades, the journey between India's financial capital and Gujarat's largest city was dominated by reliable but conventional mail, express, and Shatabdi trains. The most significant change in recent years has been the introduction and expansion of
premium, high-speed services that prioritise time and comfort. This shift offers travelers a tiered system of choices, from budget-friendly overnighters to airline-style daytime chair cars. Just this week, Western Railway announced the extension of special train services on this route to meet rising demand, ensuring more seat availability for passengers through November 2026.
Vande Bharat: The Speed King
The Vande Bharat Express has quickly become the flagship service on this route for those seeking speed. There are now two Vande Bharat services connecting the cities. These trains complete the approximately 491-kilometer journey in as little as 5 hours and 25 minutes, making it the fastest option currently available. Operating six days a week, the trains offer AC Chair Car and Executive Class configurations, both featuring modern amenities like sensor-operated doors, CCTV cameras, and comfortable seating. The morning service from Ahmedabad reaches Mumbai Central before noon, while the afternoon train from Mumbai arrives in Ahmedabad in the evening, catering perfectly to business travelers.
Tejas Express: Comfort and Luxury
As India's second private train operated by IRCTC, the Tejas Express offers a travel experience that rivals short-haul flights. While its journey time of around 6 hours and 30 minutes is slightly longer than the Vande Bharat, its main draw is the enhanced onboard experience. The train is known for its airline-style service, including high-quality catering, clean and modern interiors, and, in its Executive Class, personal LCD entertainment screens. Like the Vande Bharat, it runs six days a week and provides a premium alternative to traditional trains, focusing on a comfortable and amenity-rich journey.
Shatabdi and a Host of Others
The original premium day train, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, remains a popular and reliable choice. Launched in 1994, it covers the distance in about 6 hours and 20 minutes, offering AC Chair Car and Executive Car options with on-board catering included. Beyond these premium services, the corridor is served by over 30 other trains, including the Duronto Express, Double Decker services, and numerous superfast and mail trains that offer a range of timings, classes, and price points. These include affordable second-class seating on the Karnavati Express and overnight sleeper options like the Gujarat Mail for those who prefer to travel at night.
How They Stack Up: A Quick Comparison
Choosing the right train depends on your priority. For sheer speed, the Vande Bharat Express is the undisputed leader, cutting travel time to under six hours. For a luxury experience with premium food and amenities, the Tejas Express makes a strong case. The Shatabdi Express offers a balanced blend of speed and classic comfort, having served the route for decades. For budget-conscious travelers or those with flexible schedules, the wide array of express and mail trains provide numerous cost-effective solutions. The key change is that passengers are no longer limited to a single premium option; they can now choose based on a spectrum of speed, comfort, and cost.
Looking Ahead: The Bullet Train
The evolution of this route is far from over. Work is progressing on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, popularly known as the bullet train project. With a target completion for the full line by 2029, this service aims to cut the journey to just over two hours at speeds of 320 kmph. The main transit hub in Ahmedabad is already nearing completion, signalling a future where the travel time between these two economic powerhouses will be dramatically reduced once again.
