The lower berth is the most sought-after for a reason: convenience. It is ideal for senior citizens, families with young children, or anyone with mobility issues, as there's no climbing involved. You get the coveted window seat for views and easy access
to the aisle for stretching your legs or visiting the washroom. When it comes to luggage, the space underneath is designated for you, making it simple to stow and retrieve your bags. The primary trade-off is privacy. During the day, the lower berth becomes a communal seating area for co-passengers from the middle and upper berths. This means your personal space is limited until bedtime, officially around 10 p.m. If you enjoy social interaction and prioritize easy access over seclusion, this is your best bet.
The Upper Berth: A Private Retreat
If you value uninterrupted peace, the upper berth is a clear winner. Once you climb up, the space is exclusively yours for the entire journey. You can sleep, read, or relax at any time of day without being disturbed by fellow passengers' schedules. This makes it a favourite for solo travellers and those who prefer to sleep early. The elevated position offers a sense of security for both you and your belongings, which can be kept beside you. However, mobility is its biggest drawback. Climbing up and down can be a hassle, especially if you need to use the restroom frequently at night. Taller individuals might also find the headroom a bit restrictive for sitting up comfortably. Bag placement is also a consideration; while you can keep a small bag with you, larger luggage must be stored under the lower berth, which is shared space.
The Middle Berth: A Night-Only Compromise
The middle berth is often the least preferred option and exists only in 3-Tier AC and Sleeper classes. Its main function is as a sleeping bunk, and it can only be opened up during night hours, typically between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. This means during the day, you have no designated seat and must share the lower berth with others. This lack of personal space during waking hours is a significant downside. In terms of mobility, it requires a small climb, making it more challenging than the lower berth but less so than the upper. For privacy, it offers very little, being sandwiched between the other two berths. Luggage must be stored under the lower berth, sharing space with everyone in the bay. Essentially, the middle berth is a functional but often inconvenient choice, usually assigned when other preferences are unavailable.
The Side Lower Berth: A Seat With a View
The side lower berth functions as two seats facing each other during the day, which convert into a single bed at night. Its biggest advantage is the large window, offering excellent views throughout the journey. It provides a degree of separation from the main bay of six berths, which some travellers prefer. Mobility is excellent, but its position along the aisle means constant foot traffic, which can reduce your sense of privacy. For bag placement, the space underneath the seats is yours. However, a notable drawback is that side berths are often slightly shorter than the main berths, which can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. This berth is a great option for daytime travel and for those who value window access over seclusion.
The Side Upper Berth: The Solo Traveller’s Nook
Much like the main upper berth, the side upper offers excellent privacy. Once you are up, you are generally left undisturbed, making it ideal for sleeping at any hour. Some travellers find it offers better headroom than the main upper berth, allowing one to sit up more comfortably. For solo female travellers, the side berths in AC 2-Tier coaches are often recommended because they come with curtains, creating a private, enclosed space. The main disadvantage is mobility, as it requires a climb. Similar to the side lower, it can also be shorter in length. For luggage, a small backpack can be kept with you, but larger bags go under the side lower berth. If you're a solo traveller who wants to remain undisturbed and values privacy above all else, the side upper is an excellent choice.
