What Exactly Are Special Trains?
Special trains are temporary services introduced by Indian Railways to manage the surge in passenger demand during peak periods like the Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja festivals, or summer holidays. Unlike regular scheduled services, these trains operate
for a limited period, from a single trip to a few weeks, to connect major cities with high-demand destinations across the country. They are easily identifiable as their 5-digit train number almost always starts with a '0'. These services are announced by various railway zones to clear the extra rush and help passengers who might otherwise struggle to find confirmed tickets on their preferred travel dates.
Finding and Booking Special Trains
Information is your most valuable asset when booking a special train. Announcements are made through official Indian Railways channels, so regularly check the IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app, and press releases from zonal railways. Bookings typically open shortly after the announcement, and with the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for these trains often being much shorter than the usual 60 days—sometimes just 15 to 30 days in advance—you need to be ready. Tickets for popular routes can sell out within minutes. To improve your chances, create a 'Master List' of passengers on your IRCTC profile beforehand to auto-fill details and keep your payment methods like UPI or e-wallets ready for a quick checkout.
Understanding the Fare Structure
A key difference with special trains is their fare structure. Tickets are usually sold with a 'special charge', making them slightly more expensive than regular express or mail trains on the same route. These fares are dynamic and can be around 10% to 30% higher than the base fare of a regular train. It's important to note that concessions for senior citizens and other categories are generally not applicable on these trains. While some special trains may have a Tatkal quota, many do not, as the 'special charge' already accounts for the high-demand nature of the service. Always check the fare details on IRCTC before confirming your booking.
What to Expect Onboard
While special trains provide essential connectivity, their priority on the network can be lower than that of Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or other superfast trains, which can sometimes lead to delays. Onboard amenities can also vary. While many trains will have LHB coaches, some services, especially those arranged at short notice, might use available rakes. Due to the operational complexities of these temporary services, it's advisable to check for pantry car availability beforehand. Many older guidelines from the pandemic era, such as carrying your own linen and blankets, are no longer mandatory but remain a good practice for personal comfort and hygiene. Always carry some of your own food and sufficient drinking water as a backup.
2026 Festive Season Outlook
For the 2026 festive season covering Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath, Indian Railways has already announced thousands of additional train trips across various zones. For instance, North Central Railway has announced over 1,000 special trips operating between October 1 and November 30. Similarly, Central Railway is running over 400 special services connecting hubs like Mumbai and Pune to destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Numerous other zones including Northern, Southern, and Eastern Railways have also rolled out extensive schedules connecting cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai with key destinations to handle the festive rush. These services are being monitored closely, and more may be added based on passenger demand.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
To maximise your chances of a successful booking and a smooth journey, a few strategies can help. First, be flexible with your travel dates and consider booking from an adjacent, smaller station instead of a major terminus, as quotas may differ. If you have a waitlisted ticket, track its status regularly. Unconfirmed e-tickets on special trains are typically auto-cancelled with a full refund. Arrive at the station well in advance, as platforms for special trains can sometimes be changed at the last minute. Finally, always rely on official sources for information and be wary of unofficial agents promising confirmed tickets, as this is a common area for scams during peak seasons.
