1. Reset with a Power Cleanse
Monsoon air is heavy with moisture, pollutants, and grime, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. A single wash just won't cut it. This is the perfect season to embrace double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar
water to dissolve waterproof sunscreen, makeup, and surface oil. Follow it up with a gentle, foaming cleanser that is pH-balanced and sulphate-free. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil if you're prone to acne, as they help keep pores clear without stripping your skin’s natural barrier. This two-step process ensures your face is truly clean and prepped for the rest of your routine, preventing the dullness and congestion that humidity can cause.
2. Lighten Up Your Hydration
It’s a common myth that oily, sticky skin doesn’t need a moisturiser. In fact, skipping it can make your skin produce even more oil to compensate. The trick is to switch from heavy creams to lightweight, water-based formulas. Look for gel moisturisers, serums, or lotions containing hyaluronic acid, which pulls moisture from the air into your skin, providing deep hydration without a greasy feel. This ensures your skin remains plump and hydrated, creating a healthy barrier against the environmental stressors of the monsoon. For daytime, a lightweight moisturiser also creates a smoother canvas for makeup.
3. Don't Skip the Sunscreen
Cloudy skies are deceptive. Up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds, causing sun damage, premature ageing, and tanning. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step, rain or shine. During the monsoon, opt for a gel-based or matte-finish sunscreen with at least SPF 30. These formulas are less likely to feel heavy or sticky on the skin and won't leave a white cast. A waterproof or sweat-resistant formula is an added bonus, ensuring your protection holds up against humidity and unexpected downpours. Apply it as the last step of your skincare routine every morning, at least 20 minutes before stepping out.
4. Tame the Monsoon Mane
Humidity is the number one enemy of smooth hair, causing the hair cuticle to swell and resulting in frizz. The key is to keep your hair moisturised and sealed. Start with a sulphate-free shampoo and a nourishing conditioner. Once or twice a week, use a deep conditioning hair mask to replenish moisture. The most critical step is applying an anti-frizz serum or a lightweight hair oil to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. This creates a protective barrier that blocks humidity. Avoid heat styling as much as possible, and instead, embrace protective styles like braids or buns to keep your hair managed and frizz-free.
5. Go for Minimal, Waterproof Makeup
Heavy makeup and humidity don't mix well. The monsoon is the time to embrace a 'less is more' philosophy. Swap your heavy foundation for a tinted moisturiser, a BB cream, or even just a concealer for spot correction. To ensure your look lasts, waterproof products are your best friends. Invest in a good waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid smudging. Instead of powder blushes and eyeshadows, which can get cakey, opt for cream-based formulas that melt into the skin for a natural, dewy finish. Finally, set everything in place with a light dusting of translucent powder or a few spritzes of a makeup setting spray.
6. Pay Attention to Your Feet
Often neglected, your feet bear the brunt of the monsoon, constantly exposed to murky water and dampness, which can lead to fungal infections. Make foot care a part of your daily routine. Wash your feet with soap and water every time you come home, and make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. Apply an anti-fungal powder to keep them dry and protected. Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and keep your heels from cracking. And while it’s tempting to wear open sandals, try to wear footwear that dries quickly and offers some protection from puddles.
