The primary goal is to create a more secure and streamlined system that reduces fraud and speeds up processing at the border. More than 500,000 visas were granted to Indian citizens in the year ending March 2026, highlighting the significance of this digital shift for one of the UK's largest travel markets.
Understanding Your New UK eVisa
An eVisa is not a document you print or an email you carry. It is a secure, online record of your immigration status held by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department. This digital record is linked directly to the passport number you used in your application. To access and manage your eVisa, you must create a UKVI account. Through this online portal, you can view the details of your visa, including its validity period and the conditions of your stay, such as whether you have the right to work or study. The application process itself remains largely the same: you apply online and provide biometrics at a VFS Global centre in India. The key difference is the outcome—a digital status instead of a physical sticker.
The New Airport Experience
Without a sticker, you may wonder how you will prove you have a visa. The process is now automated. When you check in for your flight, airline staff will scan your passport. Their system will electronically verify your visa status directly with the UK Home Office database. This is why it is absolutely critical that the passport you travel with is the same one linked to your eVisa in your UKVI account. Upon arrival in the UK, Border Force officers will do the same. You simply present your passport, and their system will confirm your digital status. This eliminates the need for physical document checks at the desk, making for a potentially faster and smoother entry into the country.
A Pre-Travel Checklist for a Smooth Journey
To avoid any issues, follow this simple checklist before you travel. First, create your UKVI account as soon as your visa is granted. Log in and double-check that all your personal details, such as your name and date of birth, are correct and exactly match your passport. Most importantly, ensure your current passport is linked to your eVisa. If you get a new passport, you must update the details in your UKVI account before you travel, or you risk being denied boarding. While not mandatory, it can be useful to carry a printout of your UKVI account profile page or have an electronic copy saved on your phone as a backup, just in case.
Proving Your Rights Within the UK
Your eVisa is not just for crossing the border. It is also your tool for proving your rights within the UK, such as your right to work or rent a property. Through your UKVI account, you can generate a 'share code'. This is a unique, time-limited code that you can give to an employer or landlord. They then use this code and your date of birth on the official GOV.UK website to view your immigration status and confirm your entitlements instantly and securely. This digital method replaces the old system of photocopying passports and physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs).
