Air Travel: Cabin or Cargo?
Flying with pets in India has become more structured, but rules vary significantly between airlines. Generally, small pets can travel in the cabin, while larger ones are transported in the cargo hold. Air India, for instance, allows pets like dogs and
cats up to 10kg (including the carrier) in the cabin on many domestic and international routes. Pets weighing between 10kg and 32kg must travel as checked baggage in a temperature-controlled, pressurized hold. Akasa Air has a similar policy, allowing pets up to 10kg in the cabin. It's crucial to know that some airlines, like IndiGo, may have more restrictive policies or only allow pets on select routes. Always book your pet's spot well in advance—at least 48 hours beforehand—as there are limits to how many pets can be on a single flight. Snub-nosed breeds like pugs and French Bulldogs are often not permitted in cargo due to respiratory risks.
Train Journeys: A Uniquely Indian Option
Indian Railways offers a distinct way to travel with your pet, though it requires careful planning. The most comfortable option is to book an entire First Class AC two-berth coupe or a four-berth cabin, which allows your pet to travel with you. To secure this, you often need to submit a written request to the Chief Reservation Officer of the starting station, stating your need for a private compartment for your pet. If you can't get a private cabin, the only other option is the brake van, or luggage car. Your pet will travel in a designated cage or 'dog box'. This option can be stressful for animals due to noise and isolation, and you are responsible for arranging their food and water at station stops. Regardless of the travel class, pets are not permitted in 2AC, 3AC, Sleeper, or Chair Car coaches.
Essential Documents for Domestic Travel
No matter how you travel, proper documentation is non-negotiable. For any domestic journey by air or rail in India, you will need a few core documents. The first is an up-to-date vaccination record, with special emphasis on the rabies vaccine. The second is a fitness-to-travel certificate from a registered veterinarian. This certificate should typically be issued within 24 to 72 hours of your departure, confirming your pet is healthy enough for the journey. Always carry both the original documents and photocopies, along with your own identification. Airlines and railway officials will check this paperwork, and failure to produce it can result in your pet being denied travel.
Road Trips: Freedom with Responsibility
Travelling by car offers the most flexibility but comes with its own set of responsibilities for pet safety and comfort. Ensure your pet is safely restrained using a car harness, a carrier, or a crate. This prevents them from distracting the driver and protects them in case of a sudden stop. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, as temperatures can rise to dangerous levels very quickly. Plan for frequent stops to allow your pet to stretch, hydrate, and relieve themselves. It is also advisable not to feed your pet a large meal right before starting the journey to prevent car sickness. Pack a travel kit with water, food, bowls, waste bags, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications.
International Travel: A Different Ball Game
Taking your pet abroad from India is a significantly more complex and lengthy process. The requirements are dictated by the destination country and can take months to complete. Nearly all international pet travel begins with implanting an ISO-compliant microchip. This must be done before the rabies vaccination. Following this, a rabies titer test (a blood test to check for antibodies) may be required, which often involves a waiting period of several months. You will also need an official health certificate and potentially an import permit for the destination country. Furthermore, you'll have to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from India's Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) before departure. Due to the complexity, many pet owners opt to use professional pet relocation services for international journeys.
