A Landmark Connection for Two States
The Railway Board has approved the introduction of a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Surat, the diamond and textile hub of Gujarat, with the popular tourist destination of Udaipur in Rajasthan. This move is poised to significantly boost tourism,
trade, and social ties between the two regions by providing a faster, safer, and more convenient travel option. The service, which will be operated by the Western Railway zone, marks Surat's first Vande Bharat train and the sixth for Gujarat. It replaces the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, extending the connection directly to Surat and offering a longer, more direct route for passengers.
Official Route and Stoppages
The Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26903/26904) is slated to cover a distance of approximately 690 kilometres. The train will have nine commercial stoppages between the two terminuses, ensuring crucial connectivity for several towns and cities in both Gujarat and southern Rajasthan. The approved stops along the route are Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This route provides a direct semi-high-speed link that was previously unavailable, connecting key commercial and cultural centres. Primary maintenance for the eight-coach rake will be handled at Surat.
Timings and Frequency
The journey between Surat and Udaipur is expected to take about 7 hours and 30 minutes, a significant time saving compared to other modes of transport. The train is scheduled to run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. According to the proposed schedule, train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. These timings are designed to cater to both business travellers and tourists, allowing for convenient day travel.
The Vande Bharat Onboard Experience
Passengers on the Surat-Udaipur route will experience the modern amenities that have become synonymous with Vande Bharat trains. The eight-coach trainset features an airplane-like interior with large windows for panoramic views. Seats are ergonomic and comfortable, with those in the executive class having a rotating feature. Every seat is equipped with a mobile charging socket. Other key features include automatic plug doors, a fully sealed gangway for easy movement between coaches, CCTV surveillance, and an aerosol-based fire detection and suppression system for enhanced safety. The train is also equipped with modern bio-vacuum toilets and an onboard catering service.
Travel Highlights Along the Journey
Beyond its speed and comfort, the journey from the plains of Gujarat to the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan offers a visually engaging experience. After leaving the bustling industrial and agricultural belts of South and Central Gujarat, with stops in cities like Vadodara and Anand, the landscape begins to change. The segment from Himmatnagar onwards into Rajasthan takes passengers through the scenic Shamlaji and Dungarpur regions, offering glimpses of the rugged Aravalli range. The final approach into Udaipur, with Zawar being the last stop before the city, provides a beautiful prelude to the picturesque 'City of Lakes,' making the train journey itself a part of the travel experience.
