Indian Railways often announces special train services to clear the extra rush during festivals. For Raksha Bandhan 2026, multiple special trains have already been announced, particularly on high-demand corridors like Delhi-UP and routes connecting Madhya
Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. For instance, services are active on the Delhi–Agra–Jhansi, Jabalpur-Delhi, and Bhopal-Rewa routes. Keep a close eye on the official IRCTC website, the NTES app, and news updates for new announcements, as more services are often added closer to the festival date based on demand. These special trains are a golden opportunity for those who missed out on regular bookings.
Master the Tatkal Booking System
If you're booking last minute, the Tatkal quota is your best bet. Bookings open one day in advance of the journey's start date—at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes. To succeed, speed is everything. Use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website to pre-save passenger details, which saves crucial time. Ensure you have a fast and stable internet connection and use quick payment methods like UPI or the IRCTC wallet. Remember, Aadhaar-based OTP verification may be required, so keep the linked mobile phone handy. Agents are often barred from booking during the first 30 minutes, giving individual passengers a better chance.
Understand Your PNR Status
Don't be disheartened by a waitlisted (WL) ticket. Understand the different statuses to manage expectations. A 'CNF' or Confirmed status means you have a guaranteed seat. 'RAC' (Reservation Against Cancellation) allows you to board the train and share a side-lower berth, with a high chance of getting a full berth if there are cancellations. A 'WL' ticket means you are in a queue; if it doesn't get upgraded to RAC or CNF before the final chart is prepared (about four hours before departure), the e-ticket is automatically cancelled and refunded. You can use various apps to track your PNR status and predict confirmation chances.
Explore the VIKALP Option
When booking a waitlisted ticket, always opt for the VIKALP scheme. This free service by Indian Railways increases your chances of getting a confirmed seat. By selecting this option, you allow IRCTC to automatically reallocate your ticket to an alternate train with available seats on the same route, typically departing within 12 hours of your original train. While it doesn't guarantee confirmation, it significantly improves your odds at no extra cost. Once reallocated, you cannot board the original train.
Be Flexible with Your Plans
If getting a direct train is impossible, consider breaking your journey. Book a ticket to a major station halfway and then another ticket from there to your final destination. This often works because seat quotas are divided between stations. Similarly, try booking from a station before your actual boarding point or to a station after your destination, even if it costs a bit more. This trick, known as tapping into different station quotas, can sometimes reveal available seats. Flexibility with travel dates, even by a day or two, can also make a huge difference in ticket availability.
Check for Less Common Quotas
Beyond the general and Tatkal quotas, Indian Railways has several other quotas that might be applicable to you. These include the Ladies Quota (for women traveling alone or with a child under 12), Senior Citizen Quota, and quotas for persons with disabilities. While some concessions may not apply to Tatkal tickets, these quotas often have dedicated seats on trains that may still be available when the general pool is exhausted. Always check if you are eligible for any of these when searching for tickets.
