The first number most people see on a nutrition label is often the most misleading: the 'per serving' value. Manufacturers are required to provide this, but they get to define what a 'serving' is. This creates a loophole. A small bag of chips might seem
low in calories per serving, but the company may have defined a serving as just 10 chips, knowing full well most people will eat the entire bag. A popular Indian biscuit brand might list a serving as three biscuits, but who stops at three? This tactic, known as portion distortion, makes products appear healthier than they are when consumed in realistic quantities. Relying on 'per serving' information alone is a common mistake that can lead you to consume far more calories, sugar, and fat than you realize. Therefore, the first step to becoming a savvy shopper is to treat the 'per serving' numbers with healthy suspicion.
Your True North: The 'Per 100g' Column
So, if 'per serving' can be deceptive, what should you use? The answer is the 'per 100g' (or per 100ml) column. According to FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) regulations, most packaged foods must provide nutritional values per 100g. This is the great equaliser. It allows you to make a fair, direct comparison between two different products, regardless of their manipulated serving sizes. Think of it as comparing mileage in cars; you use a standard like kilometres per litre, not kilometres per tank. The 'per 100g' value does the same for food. When you're deciding between two brands of breakfast cereal, two types of instant noodles, or two packets of biscuits, the 'per 100g' column cuts through the marketing noise and shows you which one is genuinely lower in sugar, salt, or saturated fat.
Putting It to the Test
Let's imagine you're comparing two yoghurts. Yoghurt A boasts it has only 80 calories 'per serving'. Yoghurt B's label says 110 calories 'per serving'. At a glance, Yoghurt A seems like the winner. But now let’s look closer. The serving size for A is a tiny 80g cup, while B's serving size is a more standard 100g cup. When you look at the 'per 100g' column, you discover Yoghurt A actually has 100 calories per 100g, while Yoghurt B has 110 calories per 100g. The difference is much smaller than it first appeared. Now apply this to sugar. Yoghurt A might have 14g of sugar per 100g, while Yoghurt B has only 10g per 100g. Suddenly, Yoghurt B, which initially looked higher in calories, is the lower-sugar and therefore potentially healthier option. This simple check, which takes only seconds, gives you the real story.
Factor in the Full Pack
Once you've used the 'per 100g' value to make a fair comparison, there's one final step: consider the total pack size. This is about being honest with yourself about how much you're actually going to eat. A large 'family pack' of snacks might seem economical, but if you're likely to finish the whole thing over one or two sittings, you need to calculate the total nutritional cost. If a 200g bag of a snack has 500 calories per 100g, then eating the whole bag is a 1000-calorie commitment. Knowing this total helps you contextualise the food as either an occasional treat or a regular part of your diet. Before you put something in your cart, ask yourself: "How many servings will I realistically eat?" Then, do the quick maths. This final check connects the nutritional data to your actual consumption habits, giving you full control over your choices.
A Quick Glance at Ingredients
While the numbers tell a big part of the story, they don't tell all of it. The ingredients list is your final clue. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so the first few items make up the bulk of the product. If you see sugar, refined flour (maida), or palm oil among the first three ingredients, it’s a red flag that the product is highly processed. Also, be wary of foods with a very long list of ingredients that you don't recognise or can't pronounce. Often, a shorter, more understandable ingredients list indicates a less processed, more wholesome food. For example, some products hide high sugar content by using multiple different types of sweeteners, so no single one appears high on the list. Taking ten seconds to scan the ingredients provides valuable context that numbers alone can't offer.
