Which Trains Are Affected?
The schedule change specifically impacts two Vande Bharat Express trains originating from Varanasi Cantt. station. According to a notification from Northern Railway, passengers booked on the Varanasi-Ranchi and Varanasi-Deoghar routes need to take note
of the new timings. The revision is minor—just ten minutes—but it could be the difference between catching your train and watching it leave the platform. The change only affects the departure time from Varanasi; schedules at all subsequent stations on both routes will remain the same.
New Timings Effective September 2
The first train with a revised schedule is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888). Previously scheduled to depart at 4:05 PM, it will now leave Varanasi 10 minutes earlier, at 3:55 PM. This popular service, which runs six days a week (except Tuesday), connects major hubs like Gaya, Bokaro Steel City, and Muri. The second affected service is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). Its departure time has also been moved forward by 10 minutes. Instead of leaving at 6:20 AM, the train will now depart from Varanasi at 6:10 AM. This is an important train for pilgrims heading to the revered temple town of Deoghar.
Why Was the Schedule Changed?
Indian Railways has cited "operational reasons" for the timetable adjustment. While this is a common term used for a variety of logistical considerations, such changes are typically made to improve the overall punctuality and efficiency of the rail network. This can include de-conflicting train movements, accommodating track maintenance schedules, or optimizing the flow of services along a busy corridor. The adjustment aims to streamline operations without altering the arrival times or the schedule at other stations along the routes.
What Passengers Need to Do Now
If you are scheduled to travel on either of these trains from Varanasi on or after September 2, 2026, it is essential to verify your travel details. Even a small 10-minute change can disrupt your plans, especially if you are accustomed to the old timings. Passengers are strongly advised to check the updated schedule on the official IRCTC website, the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app, or by referring to their updated e-ticket information. Arriving at the station based on the old 4:05 PM departure for the Ranchi train or the 6:20 AM departure for the Deoghar service will result in missing the train.
Planning Your Journey to the Station
With the new, earlier departure times, travellers should adjust their pre-journey planning accordingly. For the morning train to Deoghar, passengers will need to start their day slightly earlier to ensure they reach Varanasi Cantt. station well before the 6:10 AM departure. Similarly, for the afternoon service to Ranchi, those who might have planned to arrive shortly before 4:00 PM should now aim to be at the station with enough buffer time before the 3:55 PM departure. Factoring in city traffic and last-minute platform arrangements is always a wise practice, and this schedule change makes it even more critical.
