The Problem with Your Bedroom's Climate
Most experts agree that the ideal relative humidity for sleeping is between 40% and 60%. During the monsoon, indoor humidity levels can easily surpass 70% or 80%. This damp environment not only makes you feel warmer than the actual temperature but also directly impacts sleep quality. Studies have shown that humid heat exposure significantly increases the thermal load on the body, leading to more frequent awakenings and fragmented sleep. Your body is forced to work harder to stay cool, preventing it from achieving the deep rest it needs for physical recovery and memory consolidation.

High humidity is a welcome mat for allergens that thrive in damp conditions. Mould, mildew, and dust mites multiply rapidly in moisture-rich environments. These allergens can become airborne and lurk in your mattress, pillows, and bedding. How to Reclaim a Restful Night
While you can't change the weather, you can control your bedroom's microclimate. The most effective tool is a dehumidifier, which actively removes excess moisture from the air, helping you maintain that optimal 40-60% humidity range. If you use an air conditioner, make sure the filter is clean for maximum efficiency. Using fans to circulate air can also help, but in very high humidity, they may just move the damp air around. Proper ventilation is key, so open windows when the air outside is drier, but keep them closed during heavy downpours to prevent more moisture from getting in.
Choose Your Fabrics Wisely
The fabrics you sleep in and on play a huge role in your comfort. Ditch heavy or synthetic materials like polyester, which trap heat and moisture. Instead, opt for lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabrics. Cotton, linen, and bamboo are excellent choices for both bedsheets and sleepwear. These natural fibres allow for better airflow and help pull sweat away from your skin, keeping you cooler and drier throughout the night. A lighter duvet or even just a top sheet can provide comfort without trapping excess heat.
Simple Lifestyle Adjustments
A few simple changes to your routine can make a big difference. Taking a cool or lukewarm shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature, signalling to your body that it's time to sleep. Avoid heavy meals and intense exercise close to bedtime, as both can raise your body temperature. Staying hydrated is important, but try to limit fluid intake right before you go to sleep to avoid waking up for bathroom trips. You can also place natural moisture absorbers like activated charcoal or baking soda in bowls around the room to help combat dampness.
