Choose Your Ride: Bus, Train, or Flight?
The journey from Bengaluru to Hyderabad is a well-trodden path, with plenty of options to suit every budget and timeline. The most popular choice for young travellers is the overnight bus. With dozens of operators, including KSRTC, TSRTC, and private
companies like IntrCity and FlixBus, you can find tickets starting from as low as ₹400-₹600 for a non-AC seater. An AC sleeper, which offers more comfort and lets you save on a night's accommodation, typically costs between ₹900 and ₹1,800. The journey takes about 9 to 11 hours. Trains are another fantastic, budget-friendly option. A sleeper class ticket can be as cheap as ₹365-₹400, while an AC 3-tier seat costs around ₹1,000. The travel time is similar to the bus, at around 9 to 12 hours. The new KCG Vande Bharat express is the fastest train, taking about 8 hours and 15 minutes, but is pricier. If you're short on time, a flight is the quickest way to get there, taking just over an hour. While often the most expensive option, booking in advance can get you a one-way ticket for around ₹1,200 to ₹2,500.
Budget Stays: Hostels and PGs
Hyderabad has a burgeoning scene of backpacker hostels and co-living spaces perfect for young travellers. Areas like Begumpet, Jubilee Hills, and Madhapur are popular and well-connected. Hostels such as Zostel, The Hosteller, and Slackpackr offer dorm beds at budget-friendly prices, often including breakfast and Wi-Fi. These are great places to meet other travellers. If you're planning a longer stay, consider a Paying Guest (PG) accommodation. Areas like Gachibowli, Kondapur, and Ameerpet are packed with options, especially for students. A spot in a sharing room can cost anywhere from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 a month.
Beyond the Biryani: What to Do
Hyderabad is a city of contrasts, with ancient monuments and a modern, youthful vibe. Of course, you can’t leave without trying the world-famous Hyderabadi Biryani. But once you’ve had your fill, there's plenty more to explore. For a dose of history, visit the iconic Charminar and the majestic Golconda Fort. For a different kind of experience, check out the city's growing number of creative spaces and cafes. Places like Lamakaan and Aaromale often host workshops, open mics, and music sessions. If you're looking for adventure, consider a day trip to District Gravity, an adventure park with zip lines and go-karting. For a more relaxed day, explore the boutiques and eateries in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills or take a stroll along Necklace Road by Hussain Sagar Lake.
Getting Around the City
Navigating Hyderabad is quite straightforward. The Hyderabad Metro is modern, clean, and connects major areas of the city, though it doesn't reach the Old City. For areas not covered by the metro, auto-rickshaws are everywhere. It’s best to use app-based services like Ola or Uber to book them to avoid fare disputes. Ride-sharing bike services like Rapido are also a cheap and quick way to cover short distances. TSRTC runs a vast network of city buses, which are the most budget-friendly way to get around, with fares starting as low as ₹10. You can find routes and schedules online to plan your local travel.
