The New Travel Sweet Spot
A new formula is defining how Indians travel internationally. It’s no longer a binary choice between a budget domestic trip and a prohibitively expensive Western tour. Instead, a growing number of travellers are embracing the concept of the 'sensible
upgrade'—destinations that offer a premium experience without the hefty price tag and logistical hurdles of long-haul travel. Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia have become the epicentre of this trend. Here, the Indian rupee goes further, allowing for stays in boutique hotels, private pool villas, and upscale resorts that might be unattainable in Europe or the US. This shift represents an evolution in the Indian traveller, who is now seeking better value, richer experiences, and greater comfort, all within a few hours' flight from home.
Why Asia, and Why Now?
Several factors are driving this pivot to Asia. The most significant is the increasing ease of access. A growing list of countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, now offer visa-free entry or simple visa-on-arrival for Indian passport holders. This removes a major point of friction and cost, making spontaneous trips more feasible. Furthermore, the proliferation of budget airlines and increased flight connectivity have made airfares highly competitive. A trip to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur is often shorter and cheaper than flying across India. Favourable exchange rates also mean that daily expenses on food, transport, and activities are a fraction of what they would be in the West, allowing travellers to indulge more freely.
From Sightseeing to 'Experience-ing'
The modern Indian traveller is no longer content with merely ticking off landmarks. The new currency is experiences. Recent booking data shows a surge in demand for activity-led holidays. Travellers are flocking to theme parks like Universal Studios in Singapore, exploring the coral islands off Pattaya, and discovering adventure parks like VinWonders in Vietnam. This indicates a move towards creating memorable journeys, often centered around family fun, adventure, or cultural immersion. The appeal lies in the sheer diversity of activities available—from culinary tours in Hanoi and wellness retreats in Bali to diving in the Philippines and exploring the futuristic cityscape of Singapore. Travellers are prioritising personal value and emotional rejuvenation over simply seeing the sights.
A Redefined Idea of Luxury
The concept of luxury itself is being redefined. For this new wave of travellers, luxury isn't about opulence for its own sake, but about the quality of the experience. It’s about having the privacy of a villa, access to unique local culture without the crowds, and the freedom to explore at a relaxed pace. Research shows that a majority of Indian travellers now prefer to spend on luxury travel over acquiring designer goods or even hosting lavish weddings. This experience-led mindset means they are willing to invest in what makes a trip memorable, whether it's a hotel upgrade, a private tour, or an exclusive dining experience. Asian destinations are perfectly positioned to deliver this 'value luxury', offering premium conditions and services that feel both aspirational and accessible.
