A New Era for Overnight Travel
Following the success of the Vande Bharat chair-car services, Indian Railways is expanding the fleet with a sleeper version designed for routes spanning 800 to 1,200 kilometres. These self-propelled trainsets, capable of speeds up to 180 km/h, are set to drastically
reduce travel time on key long-distance corridors. Unlike traditional locomotive-hauled trains like the Rajdhani Express, the Vande Bharat's distributed power system allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, leading to smoother rides and greater efficiency. The first service began in January 2026 between Howrah and Guwahati, and the network is now expanding.
Designing the Modern Berth
At the heart of the new sleeper trains is a complete redesign of the passenger berth. The focus is on ergonomic comfort, with wider, better-cushioned berths engineered for better body and spine support. Each berth is a self-contained unit featuring amenities like individual reading lights, USB charging points, and full-length privacy curtains. Ladders for accessing upper berths have been redesigned to be more user-friendly. First AC coaches will even offer exclusive hot shower facilities, a first for Indian Railways. These upgrades aim to create a 'hotel-on-wheels' atmosphere, prioritising restful and private travel.
Beyond the Berth: An Upgraded Experience
The passenger experience extends beyond the sleeping area. The trains feature fully sealed gangways and automatic doors, which maintain the air-conditioned climate, reduce noise, and keep the interior clean and dust-free. Onboard sanitation has seen a significant upgrade with aircraft-style bio-vacuum toilets that feature sensor-based flushing and odour control systems. A Centralised Coach Monitoring System, GPS-based passenger information screens, and Wi-Fi connectivity bring modern digital convenience to the journey. For safety, the trains are equipped with CCTV surveillance and the indigenous KAVACH automatic train protection system to prevent collisions.
Connecting India's Major Hubs
The Vande Bharat sleeper network is strategically planned to connect high-density commercial and cultural hubs. The inaugural route connected Howrah and Kamakhya (Guwahati). The second major route, set to launch on November 1, 2026, will connect Mumbai and Bengaluru. This service is expected to cover the 1,118-kilometre distance in approximately 16 hours, a significant reduction of up to eight hours compared to existing services. The standard 16-coach train accommodates 823 passengers across three classes: one First AC coach (24 berths), four Second AC coaches (188 berths), and eleven Third AC coaches (611 berths). Future plans include manufacturing more trainsets to cover other major routes.
What This Means for Passengers
The introduction of Vande Bharat sleepers represents a clear upgrade from the existing premium trains. While they operate at similar top speeds as Rajdhani Express trains, their faster acceleration and deceleration capabilities promise shorter journey times on suitable tracks. The fare structure is premium, calculated on a per-kilometre basis, and may be higher than comparable Rajdhani fares on some routes. However, the trade-off comes in the form of superior comfort, modern amenities, enhanced safety, and a significantly improved overall travel experience. With features designed to address common pain points like berth comfort, hygiene, and luggage space, these trains are positioned to become the new benchmark for long-distance rail travel in India.
