The Magic of the Shoulder Season
While the peak tourist season in the Andamans runs from December to March, the autumn months of October and November offer a unique advantage. This period, known as the shoulder season, marks the transition from monsoon to winter. The rains have washed
the islands clean, leaving them incredibly lush and green. As the monsoon recedes, the skies clear up, the humidity drops, and the sea begins to calm down, creating ideal conditions for travel and water activities. The best part? You get to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with fewer crowds and often at better prices than the peak winter rush, making it a smart choice for both budget-conscious travellers and those seeking a more peaceful escape. Late October and November, in particular, are considered among the best times to visit, as the weather becomes consistently pleasant and the sea is perfect for exploration.
Havelock Island: Your Perfect Base
For any Andaman trip centered on beaches and diving, Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep, is the undeniable hub. It’s home to some of the archipelago's most famous sights and has the best infrastructure for tourists, including a wide range of resorts, cafes, and dive centres. The island is easily accessible via a 90-minute to two-hour ferry ride from Port Blair. Upon arrival, you'll find an atmosphere of relaxed tropical charm. The main attraction is Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7), often hailed as one of Asia's best beaches. Its expansive stretch of powder-white sand and calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming and watching the spectacular sunset. Other key spots include Kalapathar Beach, known for its stunning sunrise views over black rock formations, and Elephant Beach, a popular destination for snorkelling. Most first-time visitors find that spending two to three nights on Havelock provides a good balance of activity and relaxation.
Diving into Crystal Clear Waters
Autumn is a fantastic time for scuba diving. As the monsoon subsides, underwater visibility improves dramatically, often reaching 15 to 22 meters or more by November. The water temperature is a comfortable 28-29°C. The reefs, rejuvenated by the monsoon, are teeming with replenished marine life. Havelock is the epicenter of diving in the Andamans, with numerous PADI-certified dive shops offering experiences for all levels. If you're a first-timer, you can opt for a 'Discover Scuba Dive', which requires no prior experience and allows you to explore the shallow reefs with an instructor. Certified divers can explore a variety of sites, hoping to spot everything from colourful reef fish and sea turtles to humphead parrotfish and Napoleon wrasses. The calm sea conditions post-monsoon make boat rides to dive sites smooth and the overall experience incredibly rewarding.
Island Hopping to Neil Island
A trip to the Andamans isn't complete without some island hopping, and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) is the perfect complement to the buzz of Havelock. Located just a short ferry ride away, Neil Island offers a slower, more tranquil pace of life. It’s known as the 'vegetable bowl' of the Andamans and retains a charming, rural feel. The island is small enough to be explored in a day or two. Key attractions include Bharatpur Beach, popular for its calm, shallow waters and glass-bottom boat rides, and Laxmanpur Beach, which is famous for its sunset views and the nearby Natural Bridge, a unique rock formation. For an even more relaxed experience, you can simply rent a bicycle and explore the island's paddy fields, small villages, and quiet beaches at your own pace.
Essential Planning and Travel Tips
Planning your autumn Andaman trip requires a few key steps. First, book your flights to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair well in advance. Direct flights are available from major Indian cities. From there, you'll need to book ferries to get to Havelock and Neil Island. Private ferries are faster and more comfortable for tourists and should be booked online ahead of time, especially as the season picks up. For getting around on the islands, renting a scooter is a popular and convenient option, costing around ₹500 per day on Havelock. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are also available. Pack light cotton clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. While October can still see occasional showers, they are usually brief, so a light rain jacket is a good idea. Most importantly, allow for a flexible itinerary; ferry schedules can sometimes be affected by weather, even in the good season.
