A Game-Changer for Kashmir Connectivity
The much-awaited train service to Srinagar is part of the landmark Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a 272-km railway line connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India’s rail network. While initial services began in June 2025
between Katra and Srinagar, the route was extended to Jammu Tawi on April 30, 2026, establishing a direct, modern link. Due to immense popularity and full occupancy, Indian Railways has already increased the number of coaches on its trains and has approved a third Vande Bharat service for the route, which was announced in August 2026. This development significantly cuts down travel time and reliance on the often-unpredictable NH-44 highway, especially during harsh weather.
The Route: An Engineering Marvel
Forget just getting from A to B; this journey is an experience in itself. The train travels from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar in about 4 hours and 45 minutes, traversing through some of India's most challenging terrains and incredible engineering feats. The route includes 38 tunnels and 927 bridges. Key highlights that will have you reaching for your camera include the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge standing 359 metres above the riverbed, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The train makes several stops, including at Udhampur, Katra (for Vaishno Devi pilgrims), Reasi, and Banihal.
Onboard Experience: Designed for the Modern Traveller
The Vande Bharat Express is designed for comfort and convenience. For the always-connected young traveller, this means access to onboard Wi-Fi, infotainment systems, and ample electric outlets to keep your devices charged. The coaches are fully air-conditioned, featuring large panoramic windows for soaking in the breathtaking Himalayan views, and comfortable, rotatable seats in the Executive Class. There's also onboard catering, so you can enjoy hot meals and beverages as you glide through the mountains. This specially designed train is also built to withstand Kashmir's extreme weather, with heating systems to prevent freezing in temperatures as low as -20°C.
Why Choose Rail Over Air?
While flying is faster, the train offers a unique blend of affordability, comfort, and unparalleled scenic beauty. The journey provides a gradual transition from the plains to the majestic mountains, a visual spectacle that a flight cannot offer. It's a more sustainable and often more budget-friendly choice, allowing you to save money for experiences in the valley itself. Moreover, the train journey is an adventure, turning the travel into a memorable part of your vacation rather than just a means to an end. It bypasses the hassles of airport security and potential flight delays due to weather, offering a more reliable travel option.
