Choose Your Waterproof Weapon

Prep Your Lids for Longevity
A flawless finish begins before you even pick up your eyeliner. Oily or moist eyelids are the primary culprits for smudging. Start by ensuring your lids are clean and free of excess oil. The most crucial step is applying an eye primer. A good primer creates a smooth, grippy canvas for the eyeliner to adhere to, preventing it from slipping and creasing throughout the day. If you don't have an eye primer, a thin layer of oil-free concealer set with a translucent powder can also do the trick, helping to absorb oils and lock your look in place.
Master the Art of Application
How you apply your eyeliner can make a significant difference in its durability. For liquid or felt-tip liners, try applying in short, connected dashes rather than one long, continuous line. This technique offers more control and reduces the chance of mistakes. If you're using a pencil, consider a layering technique: first, draw your line with a waterproof pencil, then trace over it with a liquid or gel liner. This creates a more defined and resilient line. For extra insurance, especially on the top lid, you can press a small amount of a matching powder eyeshadow directly on top of your liner to set it.
The Final Lock-In
Once your eyeliner is perfectly applied, the final step is to lock it all in. A makeup setting spray is your best friend for weather-proofing your entire look. After completing all your makeup, hold a bottle of waterproof or long-lasting setting spray about eight inches from your face and mist it lightly in an 'X' and 'T' motion to ensure even coverage. This creates an invisible film that helps shield your makeup from the elements, sealing your eyeliner and preventing it from transferring or fading, no matter the humidity level.
Strategic and Smarter Lining
During the monsoon or particularly humid days, you might want to adjust your eyeliner style. Heavy, dramatic looks are more prone to noticeable smudging. Consider a more subtle approach, like tightlining—applying liner to the upper waterline to make lashes appear fuller without a heavy line on the lid. If you must line your lower waterline, be sure to use a dedicated waterproof pencil designed for that sensitive area to avoid irritation and smudging. Remember that the powder-setting trick is best reserved for the upper lid to avoid getting powder in your eyes.
Gentle but Effective Removal
The very quality that makes waterproof eyeliner so effective—its staying power—can also make it difficult to remove. Rubbing and scrubbing the delicate skin around your eyes is a recipe for irritation. Instead, opt for an oil-based makeup remover or a dual-phase (oil and water) micellar water. Saturate a cotton pad, press it gently against your closed eyelid for about 30 seconds to allow the product to dissolve the eyeliner, and then gently wipe it away. This method breaks down the resilient formula without the need for harsh pulling.
